Yorkshire crush Somerset to derail County Championship title bid
Yorkshire deliver a decisive blow at Headingley
Somerset’s County Championship title hopes suffered a major setback as Yorkshire completed a 185-run victory at Headingley, dismissing the Division One leaders for just 101 on the fourth morning.

Chasing 287 for victory, Somerset resumed on 73-3 but quickly collapsed to 79-6. Their innings lasted only 82 minutes, ending shortly before midday, as Yorkshire completed a commanding win worth 19 points. Somerset collected just three.
Ben Cliff and Ben Coad spearheaded the decisive morning assault. Cliff removed Tom Lammonby for 32, with the batter caught behind, before Coad dismissed Tom Abell at backward point. Coad struck again soon afterwards when James Rew was caught at second slip, leaving Somerset in serious trouble.
Cliff then removed Craig Overton for five and trapped Lewis Gregory lbw three balls later. George Hill claimed the wicket of Migael Pretorius before Matthew Revis bowled Jake Ball to end the contest.
Cliff records career-best match figures
Cliff finished with match figures of 11-105, the 13th-best analysis in Yorkshire’s first-class history. He took eight wickets in Somerset’s first innings and added three more in the second, while Coad completed the match with four wickets in the final innings.
The result was Yorkshire’s fifth win in 13 matches and their second victory over Somerset this season, following their success at Taunton in May. It also avenged Somerset’s earlier win at Headingley in the Vitality Blast, when Overton struck an unbeaten 79 from 30 balls in the quarter-final.
Warwickshire move clear at the top
Somerset’s third defeat of the season leaves them second, 11 points behind Warwickshire. They have never won the County Championship title. Nottinghamshire remain in contention and could challenge for the crown even if they lose to Sussex.
Somerset will face Surrey at Taunton in the final round of fixtures, beginning on Thursday. Yorkshire now have the chance to influence the title race again when they travel to Trent Bridge to meet Nottinghamshire.
