Colorado Rapids refuse to abandon identity in playoff push against LA Galaxy

Colorado keep faith with their approach

Colorado Rapids will take a clear message into their pivotal MLS meeting with LA Galaxy: stay true to their identity and focus only on the next game.

Colorado Rapids players during their MLS playoff push

The Rapids currently occupy seventh place in the Western Conference with 36 points and are unbeaten in their last three matches, winning once and drawing twice. Their latest result, however, exposed some defensive vulnerability: Colorado surrendered a 3-1 lead against the Seattle Sounders before conceding twice in the final 15 minutes, including a stoppage-time equaliser from Caden Clark.

Colorado's away form has also been a concern. They have failed to win any of their last five league matches on the road, with their most recent away victory coming against Minnesota United before the World Cup break in May.

Wells rejects special playoff messaging

Despite the pressure of the regular-season run-in, Matt Wells said the Rapids would not alter their preparation or approach for the Galaxy.

“We try and win every game,” Wells said. “For me, our process here is that we're always immersed in the game preparation.”

Wells stressed that looking beyond the Galaxy would risk losing focus, insisting Colorado must concentrate on the opponent immediately in front of them and execute the game plan prepared by the coaching staff.

“We have to be fully focused on our next opponent,” he said. “We're in a good spot. It's about us going out and playing to our identity, playing our style and executing the game plan that we've put into place.”

The coach added that Colorado have generally been successful whenever they have maintained that identity and carried out their plan effectively.

Galaxy arrive with momentum

LA Galaxy are three points behind the Rapids in eighth and remain firmly in the postseason race. They have lost only once in their last four league matches, recording two wins and a draw during that stretch.

The Galaxy enter the contest after a 3-2 comeback victory over Minnesota United last weekend. They trailed 2-1 in the 75th minute before scoring twice to complete the turnaround, only the second time in the last eight seasons that they have won after falling behind that late in a match.

Players to watch

Marco Reus has scored three goals for LA Galaxy this month, matching his best total in a single calendar month for the club. His latest regular-season goal was the 13th of his MLS career, although only two of those goals have come on the road for LA Galaxy.

For Colorado, Morgan Whittaker will attract attention after scoring twice in his first career start for the club. He became the second Rapids player to score a brace in his first start of the season, following Kosi Thompson. Before this season, the last player to achieve the feat for Colorado was Raul Diaz Arce in 2001.

Galaxy favoured despite Colorado threat

LA Galaxy have recorded 41 all-time regular-season wins against Colorado, including shootout victories, tying their highest total against any MLS opponent. The Galaxy are therefore favoured in the matchup, with the win probability listed at 45.3%, compared with 27.8% for Colorado and 26.9% for a draw.

Colorado did score three goals in their 3-3 draw with Seattle, their first match with at least three goals since a 6-2 victory over Houston Dynamo in April. Yet after scoring at least three times in three of their first seven matches in 2026 across all competitions, they have reached that mark only once in their last 23 games.
