Virat Kohli joins Sachin Tendulkar as second batter in history to reach 15,000 ODI runs
India batting stalwart Virat Kohli added yet another monumental milestone to his illustrious career on Sunday, becoming only the second batter in One-day International history to cross the 15,000-run threshold.
Kohli achieved the feat during India's run-chase against the West Indies in the first ODI held in Thiruvananthapuram. The milestone arrived in style when he pulled a short delivery from pacer Alzarri Joseph past mid-wicket to the boundary.
Standing Ovation in Thiruvananthapuram
The Thiruvananthapuram crowd rose to its feet to deliver a thunderous standing ovation as Kohli raised both arms in celebration to acknowledge the reception. The historic boundary took Kohli's ODI tally past 15,000 runs, cementing his position in an exclusive group previously occupied only by legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar.
Tendulkar heads the all-time ODI run chart with 18,426 runs compiled across 463 matches, having notched 49 centuries and 96 half-centuries over his career.
Fastest to the Milestone
Kohli reached the landmark at a blistering pace compared to his predecessor. While Tendulkar required 377 innings and 17,528 balls to reach 15,000 runs, Kohli crossed the line in just 303 innings and 15,950 deliveries across 315 matches.
With 54 centuries and 80 fifties to his name, Kohli boasts an ODI average of 58.83 and a strike rate exceeding 94, with a personal best score of 183.
All-Time ODI Leading Run-Scorers
Kohli has held the second spot in the all-time run-scoring list since overtaking former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara (14,243 runs). Behind them on the elite leaderboard sit Australia's Ricky Ponting (13,704 runs) and Sri Lankan great Sanath Jayasuriya (13,430 runs).
