Coventry thrash Newcastle 4-1 to climb out of the relegation zone
Four-goal Coventry deliver a statement win
Coventry City surged out of the Premier League relegation zone with a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at the CBS Arena, securing their first home win of the season and making it two league victories in a row.
Jack Rudoni put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the sixth minute after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek brought down Sidiki Cherif. Cherif, making his first Premier League start for Coventry, then doubled the lead three minutes into the second half with a low strike from outside the box.

Newcastle briefly threatened a response when Sven Botman struck from long range in the 70th minute. But substitute Ellis Simms restored Coventry’s two-goal cushion in the 81st minute, scoring with his first touch, before 18-year-old Stephen Mfuni capped the result with a finish four minutes later. Mfuni’s goal made him Coventry’s youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer.
Newcastle waste chances as Coventry take theirs
The scoreline followed a match in which Newcastle created opportunities but failed to convert them. Matias Fernandez-Pardo had a shot cleared off the line by Bobby Thomas after rounding the goalkeeper, while Coventry stood firm after Botman’s goal and punished the visitors late on.
Newcastle suffered a second consecutive 4-1 away defeat. Former defender Jamie Carragher said the team had been “beaten up” in their last two away games, pointing to a lack of physicality. Head coach Matthias Jaissle apologised to travelling supporters and said his side needed to improve in both penalty areas, adding that the “desire and hunger to finish the attacks was missing.”
Lampard urges Coventry to stay grounded
Frank Lampard praised his players’ spirit and work rate, saying: “We played like the team we want to be here.” He called it a “great feeling” but warned the squad to keep its feet on the ground, with many more points needed for survival.
The victory lifted Coventry to 14th, according to the BBC report, after successive wins. Lampard’s side next travel to Tottenham, while Newcastle will look to respond at home against Aston Villa.
