Slot Cautiously Optimistic About Isak's Return from Injury
Liverpool manager Arne Slot is taking a measured approach with Alexander Isak's return to first-team action after the Swedish striker's lengthy injury absence. Isak suffered a broken ankle and fibula during Liverpool's victory against Tottenham in December, keeping him sidelined for exactly 101 days before returning to training this week.
The 26-year-old forward, who signed from Newcastle United in a club-record transfer, has struggled with form and fitness since arriving at Anfield, managing just three goals in 16 appearances. However, Slot expressed optimism about his progress despite the extended absence.
"It will definitely be too fast to expect him in the starting line-up," Slot said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City. "He has trained with us yesterday for the first time and today will be the second time after exactly 101 days."
Gradual Recovery Approach
Slot emphasized the need for patience in Isak's recovery process. "It will take a bit of time to give him a lot of minutes but we will make sure we do the right thing in terms of building him up," he explained. "It is a very good thing to have him on the training ground again. It would be an even better thing to have him in games, that's for sure."
The Liverpool manager acknowledged the complexities of potentially including Isak in the squad against Manchester City, given the possibility of extra time. "It is a difficult one because we don't play a normal game. What I mean is it could go to extra time so that makes it even more complicated if we bring him in and we think he can only play 10 minutes and bring him on and then it goes to extra time."
Potential for Limited Minutes
While ruling out a starting role, Slot didn't completely dismiss the possibility of Isak making a brief appearance. "Maybe a few minutes but let's wait and see how he is today, how he feels about it himself," he noted. "It's clear after two training sessions in 100 days, it would not make any sense to start him."
Interestingly, Slot suggested that the injury layoff might have actually benefitted the striker physically. "If I look at him now compared to where he was before he got injured I see a player that is much stronger, physically in a much better place," he observed.
Long-Term Outlook
Slot tempered expectations for Isak's immediate impact, pointing to the challenges ahead. "Going from 100 days off to the intensity of the Premier League in the end phase of the season and the end phase of the Champions League where usually the opposition you face is even harder, what's realistic to expect? That's difficult."
However, the manager expressed optimism about Isak's future contributions. "I am really happy that I have at least a No. 9 again available behind Hugo [Ekitike] or together with Hugo so that is already a positive thing," he said. "What to expect, I think I've said many times that next season when he's had a preseason, we can expect more from him than now."
The return of Isak provides valuable attacking depth for Liverpool during the crucial run-in, with the team competing on multiple fronts including the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.
