Najmul Hossain Calls for Better Batting Application in ODI Cricket

Bangladesh cricket team preparing for ODI match

Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain has raised serious concerns about the national team's batting performance in One-Day Internationals, pointing to a troubling trend of carrying a T20 mindset into the 50-over format. The comments come at a crucial time as Bangladesh prepares for their upcoming series against Pakistan, marking their return to ODI cricket since October last year.

Statistical Decline in ODI Performance

Najmul highlighted the stark reality facing Bangladesh cricket: "Not long ago, ODIs were considered one of Bangladesh's strongest formats. However, recent statistics suggest otherwise." The team's performance has been worrying, with only seven victories in their last 25 ODIs, 14 losses, and one washed-out match. This represents a significant downturn for a team that once considered ODIs their strongest suit.

The T20 Mindset Problem

Najmul pinpointed the core issue affecting Bangladesh's ODI batting: "In the last one to one-and-a-half years, we have played a lot of T20 cricket. So that could be one reason. Batsmen always have things like strike rate and big shots in their minds."

He elaborated on the necessary shift in approach: "How we can calm down a bit and build the innings rather than thinking too much about fours and sixes - if we improve in this area, then you will see that we can dominate the full 50 overs."

Domestic Cricket Echoes International Concerns

The captain expressed particular disappointment with what he observed during the Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) one-day tournament. "If you look at the entire BCL tournament, every team played in a similar way. It was very disappointing, especially for my own team," Najmul stated.

He emphasized the troubling pattern: "All four teams had experienced players who have played 50, 60, 70 ODIs. In such a situation, as a whole batting unit, we should have been more consistent. There should have been more hundreds, and we should have dominated for 50 overs, which didn't happen."

Call for Change Before Pakistan Series

Najmul stressed the urgency of addressing these issues before the Pakistan series: "This is something that is also happening in international cricket. So as batsmen, we need to focus more on this area. With the Pakistan series ahead, how we overcome this area is important."

The upcoming series against Pakistan serves as more than just another bilateral contest - it represents Bangladesh's return to ODI cricket since their home series against West Indies in October 2023. More importantly, it will serve as crucial preparation for both teams ahead of the 2025 ODI World Cup scheduled to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Looking Forward

The Bangladesh Test captain concluded by reiterating his concern: "I think as a batting unit, in the last ten to twelve ODIs we haven't been able to bat properly for 50 overs. So that is a concern - how we can bat well, especially in the middle overs, and finish the innings."

Najmul's comments highlight a critical juncture for Bangladesh cricket as they seek to rediscover their ODI prowess ahead of a significant international calendar. The ability to adapt their batting approach could determine their success in the upcoming series and beyond as they build toward the 2025 World Cup.
