Williams Outlines Major Upgrade Path for Late 2026 Season

Williams is determined to close the gap in the 2026 campaign after a difficult start to the season. Team Principal James Vowles has detailed a comprehensive development roadmap for the FW48, aimed at improving the team's P8 standing in the Constructors' Championship.

Vowles admitted that the team was on the back foot following a tough pre-season where the car was overweight and missed key shakedowns. However, he expressed admiration for the development rates of rivals like Racing Bulls and Audi, stating, "I'm impressed by how competitive the field is now... Our goal, simply for the time being this year, is to be ahead of them."

The Development Timeline

The upgrade path is designed to be incremental, with significant milestones planned throughout the summer:

  • Silverstone: Described as a "nice little step" forward.
  • Summer Break: Development will continue past August, with Vowles claiming few other teams will be adding performance at the rate Williams plans.
  • Baku: This is where Vowles expects the most impact, stating, "you'll see quite a major change."

Solving Balance Issues

A critical focus for the team has been correcting chassis balance. Vowles revealed that Alex Albon's car was sent back to the factory to address discrepancies between left and right-hand corners. While these differences are slight, they become exposed on high-temperature tracks, such as the Red Bull Ring.

Vowles noted that the rig work performed at the factory was "very positive," and the changes implemented have already begun to yield results.
