Kimi Antonelli Dominates Friday Practice at Austrian Grand Prix
World championship leader Kimi Antonelli delivered a commanding performance on Friday, topping both free practice sessions for the Austrian Grand Prix. The 19-year-old Italian driver not only secured a Mercedes one-two in the opening session but further distanced himself from the field in FP2, cementing his status as the clear favorite for the weekend.
FP1: Mercedes One-Two Amidst Rival Woes
The day began with a strong showing from Mercedes, as Antonelli edged out his teammate George Russell by just 0.040s to lead the first practice session. While the Silver Arrows looked composed, their competitors struggled with reliability. Lando Norris of McLaren lost 45 minutes of track time due to a hydraulics leak, and both Red Bull drivers faced software issues.
Max Verstappen, running a heavily upgraded car, was forced to stop twice in the pit lane during the first 20 minutes and expressed frustration with the car's stability, stating that the "whole car is shaking under braking."
FP2: Antonelli Breaks the 1m 07s Barrier
In the second session, Antonelli escalated his pace, becoming the first driver to break into the 1m 07s bracket with a blistering 1:07.014s. This time was particularly impressive as it was delivered on his second flying lap with worn soft tyres.
McLaren showed significant strength, with Oscar Piastri finishing second (0.237s adrift) and Lando Norris taking third. Despite the strong result, Piastri remained humble, noting that they were "a step behind Mercedes, or at least Kimi."
Conversely, George Russell struggled in FP2, finishing sixth and over six tenths behind his teammate. While Russell focused his concerns on McLaren's pace, Sky Sports F1's Karun Chandhok suggested Russell might have "worried thoughts" regarding the gap to Antonelli, stating the Italian looks to be on "devastating form."
Technical Dramas and Rookie Appearances
The day was a nightmare for Cadillac. Sergio Perez suffered repeated stops on track, and Valtteri Bottas experienced a frightening moment when his car caught fire in the pit lane after part of the floor dragged along the ground. Both drivers ended the day at the bottom of the leaderboard without completing meaningful runs.
The sessions also featured mandatory rookie stints. Dino Beganovic, replacing Charles Leclerc for Ferrari, finished ninth, while Arvid Lindblad impressed in sixth for Racing Bulls during FP1.
The paddock now turns to Saturday's final practice and qualifying, where teams will look to refine their setups and optimize their upgrade packages.
