Kimi Antonelli Questions 25-Point Gap to George Russell Ahead of Belgian Grand Prix

Reliability Woes Shadow Title Battle

Kimi Antonelli arrives at the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend reflecting on a series of unfortunate events that have seen him fall 25 points behind his Mercedes teammate, George Russell, in the Drivers' standings.

The Italian teenager, who enjoyed a dominant streak of five consecutive race wins earlier this season, believes it is "really hard to judge" if the current points gap is a fair reflection of their performance, citing reliability issues that have plagued both drivers.

Luck of the Draw at Silverstone and Barcelona

Antonelli's momentum was halted during the British Grand Prix. While chasing eventual winner Charles Leclerc, a detached front-left wheel shield forced the driver into two unscheduled pit stops. Combined with a five-second penalty for track limits, Antonelli finished outside the points.

Responding to George Russell's assertion that the 25-point gap is "probably correct," Antonelli pointed to specific moments where points were lost for both parties. "In my case, we were going towards a result that was almost certain, Barcelona was P2. Silverstone we cannot know because I didn't have a shot, but I think it would have been a fight for it [the victory]," Antonelli stated during Thursday's media day at Spa.

He also acknowledged Russell's own misfortunes, specifically mentioning Montreal where Russell was leading before a retirement. "I have to say, both of us had bad luck and one of us had it at more critical moments at times, but it's the way it is, this is how motorsport goes," he added.

Mercedes Facing Reliability Crisis

Despite possessing what is arguably the quickest package on the grid, Mercedes has seen its lead in the Teams' standings shrink to just 78 points over Ferrari due to frequent mechanical failures.

Antonelli emphasized the urgency for the team to improve: "As a team, definitely reliability has not been our strongest point. We've realised ourselves that it's something we need to keep working on. Ferrari seem very strong on that side."

With Lewis Hamilton currently trailing Antonelli by 32 points, the internal dynamic at Mercedes remains tight as the team heads into the challenging Spa-Francorchamps circuit.
