Lando Norris has claimed his first victory of the 2026 season, dominating the final race before the summer break at the Hungarian Grand Prix. While Norris showed championship-winning form, his path to the top step of the podium was smoothed by a series of dramatic incidents involving his rivals.

Piastri and Sainz Collision

The race's most contentious moment occurred when early leader Oscar Piastri collided with Williams driver Carlos Sainz at Turn 2. Piastri, attempting to lap Sainz, lost control momentarily, allowing Norris to emerge from the pits in the net lead. The incident was compounded by a failure in the automated blue flag system, which normally notifies lapped drivers via dashboard lights.

A fuming Piastri did not hold back after the race, describing the lack of awareness as "unacceptable." He told reporters, "Getting crashed into by a lapped car is never one of the things you expect that can go wrong in your race... I don’t really care if he didn’t see me."

Sainz was handed a five-second time penalty for causing the collision, though stewards noted "limited visibility reduced the degree of culpability." Piastri's day ended in heartbreak when a gearbox failure forced him to retire with 15 laps remaining.

Mercedes' Mixed Fortunes

For Mercedes, the weekend was a study in contrasts. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli secured a smartly-taken podium finish, further extending his lead in the drivers' standings. In contrast, George Russell's race was ruined by start-line trouble. Russell suffered from an anti-stall issue, with team boss Toto Wolff noting, "It looks like that he gave about 10 percent throttle, and the whole thing revved maximum." Russell admitted the result was "s—t" and expressed a desperate need for the summer break.

The race concluded with Max Verstappen taking second place after a brilliant final stint on soft tyres, followed by the charging Kimi Antonelli in third.
