Sporting KC Close to Record-Breaking Transfer

Sporting Kansas City have reached a verbal agreement in negotiations to sign Brazilian winger André Luiz from Greek club Olympiakos, sources briefed on the deal have confirmed.

The MLS side would pay an initial fee of $18 million plus further performance-based add-ons, according to multiple sources. If completed, the transfer would rank among the largest fees in MLS history.

Luiz's Impressive Form

The 24-year-old only joined Olympiakos in January from Portuguese side Rio Ave FC. During the first half of the 2025-26 season, Luiz delivered standout performances in the Portuguese top flight, recording seven goals and six assists in 19 matches across 1,500 minutes of play.

However, he saw limited playing time with Olympiakos in the second half of the season, prompting interest from multiple clubs across Europe and North America.

Sporting KC's Complete Overhaul

The potential signing comes as Sporting Kansas City undergo a comprehensive restructuring of its roster and sporting operations in 2026. David Lee was appointed as sporting director, while Rapha Wicky was installed as head coach as part of the club's rebuild.

The team has been methodical in building out its front office infrastructure, which resulted in slower signings early in the process. The club prioritized getting the structure right before making major investments in playing personnel.

Luiz would represent the marquee addition to Sporting KC's squad, provided the club successfully completes the transfer. The parties still need to work through final details and put pen to paper on the agreement.

Previous Transfer Activity

Sporting KC had previously entered the race for Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah and emerged as MLS's top suitor, though that pursuit was always viewed as a longshot by those close to the situation.

The club has already strengthened its roster with several additions during this overhaul, including defenders Moises Mosquera, Or Blorian, Diego Borges, and Emir Karic, plus midfielders Lasse Berg Johnsen and Capita Capemba.

Club Desperately Needs Boost

The signing could not come at a better time for Sporting Kansas City. The club currently sits at the bottom of the Western Conference with just 14 points after 18 matches in the 2026 MLS season.
