Edin Dzeko has signed a new one-year contract at Schalke, a deal that will take the veteran striker beyond his 41st birthday and keep him at the Veltins-Arena for the club's return to the Bundesliga.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international joined Schalke in January and scored six goals in 11 appearances, helping the Gelsenkirchen-based club secure promotion back to Germany's top flight three years after their relegation.

Schalke announced the renewal on social media with the message "Edin Džeko bleibt Schalker!" — Edin Džeko remains a Schalke player — confirming that the striker had signed a new one-year contract and would play in the Bundesliga in his 23rd professional season. "Great that you're staying with us, Edin!" the club added.

Dzeko featured for his nation at this summer's World Cup, starting three of Bosnia and Herzegovina's four matches, including their last-32 defeat to the United States.

A career defined by goals

The former Manchester City striker arrives at his latest contract with a remarkable scoring pedigree. He scored 46 goals across two seasons at Fenerbahce, having previously netted 150 times across eight seasons at Roma and then Inter in Italy.

Dzeko also knows German football well. He previously played for Wolfsburg, winning the 2008-09 league title before finishing as the Bundesliga's leading scorer the following campaign. During a five-year stay at Manchester City between 2010 and 2015, he won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and the League Cup.

He remains Bosnia and Herzegovina's record scorer with 73 goals and record appearance-maker with 151 caps.

Dzeko remains a goal threat

Dzeko arrived at Schalke on a free transfer at a crucial moment last season. His six goals in 11 appearances described his literal contribution, but he also became part of a senior core at Veltins-Arena — alongside Loris Karius, Kenan Karaman and Nikola Katic — that helped the side recover from a few stumbles, achieve promotion and ultimately return to the Bundesliga.

Can he be a difference maker at a higher level? Perhaps. Dzeko is obviously beyond his physical prime, but he remains an extremely awkward opponent for any centre-back and, as last season proved, is still well capable of taking the chances that fall to him.

Schalke are an enormous club who belong at the highest level of German football. Nevertheless, they are still newly promoted and will find themselves outmatched against many opponents this season. So while Dzeko's forward play will have worth, his standing and experience may prove to have even more value — making this extension entirely logical.
