Inside Kimi Antonelli’s Meteoric Rise from Garage Prodigy to Formula 1 Title Favourite

When Kimi Antonelli was just 10 years old, his father Marco strapped his son onto his lap inside a Lamborghini race car at Italy's Adria circuit. Marco operated the throttle and brake, while the young boy took charge of the steering wheel and gear shifts. Barreling down the straight toward a 320km/h braking marker, Marco pushed the car to its absolute limit.

"The car had a lot of oversteer. Kimi controlled the oversteer perfectly, then I went on the throttle, Kimi finished the oversteer, changed gear, and went," Marco Antonelli recalled. "I said: 'OK, stop, because it has now become dangerous.' But when I saw the video, 10 years old, on my leg, oversteer, everything perfect, I said: 'Maybe he has something special.'"

Now in his second Formula 1 season with Mercedes, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has transformed that innate talent into a commanding title challenge. The Italian sensation is in prime position to become Formula 1's youngest world champion, aiming to be Italy's first title winner since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

Born in a Garage

Antonelli’s motorsport education began almost at birth. Marco and his wife Veronica operated their own racing team business in Italy, immersing their son in the paddock environment from infancy.

"Kimi from 15 days old was in the garage and heard the sound of the engine and the smell of the exhaust," Marco said. By age three, Kimi was practicing on a simulator Marco had brought home during the Christmas holidays. By age five, he was driving go-karts and demonstrating natural understanding of racing lines and car control.

Marco, who had faced bitter career disappointments as a driver in the 1990s when promising factory drives with Alfa Romeo and BMW evaporated, initially felt immense stress regarding his son's ambition. As a family of modest means unable to self-fund an F1 ascent, Marco planned to fund Kimi through karting and Formula 4 before transitioning him into GT cars. However, Kimi’s dominance across junior categories soon attracted the sport's heavyweight talent scouts.

Mercedes driver academy scout Gwen Lagrue spotted Antonelli at age 11 when the Italian was outperforming rivals despite driving an underpowered kart. Mercedes quickly signed him, alleviating financial strain and setting him on a rapid path through the junior single-seater ladder, where he captured Formula 4 and Formula Regional titles.

Wolff's Gamble and the Brutal Reality of F1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff identified Antonelli early on as the natural heir to Lewis Hamilton. When Hamilton opted to depart for Ferrari ahead of 2025, Wolff immediately phoned Marco Antonelli to offer the teenager the race seat.

"We were reviewing options and trying to come to a fairly rapid conclusion," said Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin. "We were all keen to just go with Kimi, which we knew was a bit of a risk. But it was quite exciting and we thought, based on his career to date, he had a good chance of being very good."

Despite the meteoric trajectory, Antonelli's debut campaign presented steep learning curves. Following an error on the penultimate lap at the Qatar Grand Prix where Lando Norris passed him, Antonelli faced severe online scrutiny.

"Last year I probably would have said different things compared to this year, especially because I think the F1 environment is very brutal. It’s great, but at times it can be very, very brutal," Antonelli reflected. "What was hard for me in Qatar was getting blamed for something that I would never do... to get really criticised publicly, openly about something that I would never do on purpose, it was tough."

Chasing History with Mercedes

Antonelli bounced back emphatically in his sophomore campaign, putting together a blistering run of five consecutive grand prix victories between China and Monaco to take control of the standings.

Even with intense pressure and the expectations of an adoring Italian public, Antonelli credits his grounded approach and close relationship with his father for keeping him focused.

"My dad always comes to most of the races, we have a really strong relationship, he’s kind of my rock," Antonelli said. "He always tells me that I need to be also free to take my own decisions about things, that I don’t need to be stuck by what he says."

Looking ahead to a potential championship celebration, the youngster already has instructions for his Brackley-based team: "If I achieve the goal by the end of the year then I’m going to print the lyrics [of the Italian national anthem] so then they can learn it."
