Brittany Mahomes turns Kansas City Current co-ownership into platform for women’s sport
Brittany Mahomes moves from former player to owner shaping women’s soccer
Long before her name became familiar to NFL fans, Brittany Mahomes forged her own relationship with sport through soccer. The experience gave her firsthand insight into the demands, discipline and commitment of professional athletics, a background she now draws on as a founding co-owner of National Women’s Soccer League club Kansas City Current.
Mahomes has taken an active role in a project designed to help women’s soccer grow, challenging the narrow way women connected to high-profile male athletes are often viewed. Public attention may have first followed her through Patrick Mahomes, but her work with the Current has given her a distinct professional identity.
Building culture and investment around the Current
The shift from athlete to owner brought a different kind of responsibility. Instead of focusing only on performance on the field, Mahomes has helped shape the environment around players, fans and the wider sport.
In a February 2026 interview with Sports Illustrated, she explained her motivation:
“Being able to be involved in the sport, and really help elevate women’s sports, is something that I’m super passionate about,” Mahomes says of her dedication to the league. “And so getting involved in the KC Current and building a championship culture here and really setting the standard and the bar for women’s sports is super cool. So, just getting involved and getting more excitement around the NWSL and helping when I can with the platform that I have and just empowering female athletes in women’s soccer is something that I'm really excited about.”The club has backed that ambition with major infrastructure. CPKC Stadium opened in 2024 as the first stadium built specifically for a women’s professional sports team. The Current went on to win the 2025 NWSL Shield, awarded to the team with the league’s best regular-season record.
Storytelling through KC Current Studios
Mahomes’ commitment is also reflected in how stories about women’s sport are told. On August 3, 2026, she attended the opening of KC Current Studios, a new broadcasting and production facility created by the club to share its work and connect with audiences beyond match days.
At the opening she spoke about the lasting impact sport can have:
"One of my favorite things about sports is what happens beyond the game, whether it's the confidence, the friendships, the inspiration, the impact on young boys and girls who see what's possible ... those stories matter and they deserve to be shared,"A dedicated production facility gives the club more room to tell those stories in its own voice, bringing players and their experiences to fans through original content and giving women’s sports more opportunities to shape how their athletes are represented.
Beyond the NFL spotlight
Being married to one of the NFL’s most recognisable quarterbacks brings constant public attention. Mahomes’ work with the Current shows how she has used that visibility to support a field she knows firsthand, making room for her own ambitions alongside it.
She has also appeared in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, including as a 2026 digital cover star, while continuing to speak about women’s soccer and her role with the Current. Together these parts of her public life reflect a woman who has not limited herself to one label.
The impact of her work will take shape over time through the opportunities the club creates, the audience women’s soccer reaches and the stories young athletes get to see about people who have pursued their goals. For aspiring athletes, finding a voice is important, but using it to create room for others can make it matter even more.
