Walter says New Zealand let winning chances slip in first two T20Is

New Zealand coach sees narrow margins behind 0-2 start

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter believes his side has been competitive in the opening two T20Is against India, despite losing both, and says missed opportunities at key moments have proved decisive.

“Both games we could easily have been on the winning side of it, but weren't,” Walter said after New Zealand's four-wicket defeat in the second match. He said his team had let chances to close out each game pass, describing the results as disappointing while also expressing satisfaction with the team's overall performances.

Walter noted that New Zealand had limited competitive cricket together before the series, but felt the side had played well for long stretches. In the second T20I, he said, fielding errors and a no-ball contributed to the defeat.

New Zealand lost three wickets in the powerplay but recovered to post 180. Walter singled out Bevan and Glenn for helping rebuild the innings, saying: “It's not often you get to 180 from that position.” He added that the total was defendable.

Walter also praised captain Mitchell Santner, who claimed four wickets, for varying his pace and controlling the ball without much help from the pitch. “Sometimes it's unappreciated just how skilful he is,” Walter said, calling the performance a strong display of Santner’s range. He also highlighted the captain's composure and leadership as assets as New Zealand look to respond in the remaining matches.
