Sri Lanka Dealt Blow as Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal Ruled Out of Colombo Test Against India
Sri Lanka's Batting Crisis Deepens Ahead of Must-Win Colombo Test
Sri Lanka have been dealt a significant blow ahead of the second Test against India in Colombo, with Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal both confirmed as unavailable for the crucial fixture. Top-order batter Pathum Nissanka is also a major doubt, leaving the hosts short of three first-choice batters in what is a must-win Test match.
Kirsten Confirms Injury Updates
Sri Lanka head coach Gary Kirsten delivered the grim news following the team's defeat in the series opener in Galle, acknowledging the mounting injury concerns within the squad.
"Kusal Mendis has got a proper hamstring injury. He's not going to be available for a while," Kirsten said. "I'm not sure of the injury update, but as it stands at the moment, those guys... Nissanka as well, Dinesh [Chandimal] is not available for the next Test. We're missing a few guys."
Breakdown of Injuries
Mendis has been sidelined since injuring his hamstring during the Lanka Premier League and has not recovered in time for the second Test. Nissanka, meanwhile, is still recovering from wrist surgery, adding to the top-order void. Chandimal's absence stems from a neck and shoulder injury sustained while fielding during the Galle Test, compounding the selection headaches for the coaching staff.
Replacements and Opportunities
Niroshan Dickwella, who was brought in as Mendis's replacement in the Test squad, made a valuable contribution with a knock of 80 in the first innings in Galle and is expected to retain his place. Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who made his debut as Chandimal's concussion substitute in Galle, scored a first-ball duck but may get another opportunity to prove his credentials in Colombo.
With three key batters potentially missing, Sri Lanka face an uphill task as they look to level the series against India in Colombo.
