Mercedes Dominates Australian GP with 1-2 Finish, Ferrari and McLaren Trail Behind
Mercedes' Strong Start to 2026 Season
The Australian Grand Prix marked a strong start to the 2026 Formula 1 season for Mercedes, as George Russell and Kimi Antonelli secured a 1-2 finish. The team's performance was a significant improvement from previous seasons, with Russell claiming pole position and Antonelli lining up alongside him.

Despite losing positions at the start, both drivers recovered to finish on the top two steps of the podium. Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal, expressed his contentment with the team's performance, stating, 'There's so much contentment that I feel in the team at the moment.'
Ferrari's Strategy and Performance
Ferrari's performance was strong, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton executing better starts on the opening lap. However, their decision not to pit under the Virtual Safety Car limited their chances of challenging Mercedes for the win.

Fred Vasseur, Ferrari Team Principal, explained that they targeted the optimum strategy for their drivers, but were surprised by Mercedes' tire life. 'We targeted the optimum for us, and the optimum was to extend,' Vasseur said.
McLaren's Challenges
McLaren faced challenges, with Oscar Piastri crashing out on the way to the grid and Lando Norris finishing fifth. Andrea Stella, McLaren Team Principal, acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, 'There's performance that needs to come from two main areas. One is the power unit exploitation, and one is having more grip in the corners.'

The team's data collection was limited due to Piastri's crash, but Stella believes they will bounce back in China. 'Oscar will use all this to get even more concentrated and determined, starting from China,' he said.
