Lindblad 'Extremely Happy' with Impressive P9 in First F1 Qualifying

In a breakout performance that has sent ripples through the paddock, rookie Arvid Lindblad qualified an astonishing ninth for his debut Formula 1 race at the Australian Grand Prix. Driving for Racing Bulls at the Albert Park Circuit, the 18-year-old Briton surpassed expectations and emerged as one of the standout performers of Qualifying, finishing just one place behind his seasoned teammate Liam Lawson, who secured P8.

"I knew coming into the session we were fast," Lindblad said after the session, visibly thrilled. "All weekend we’ve been quite competitive. I was trying not to get too excited after Friday, because you never know how things might change, but deep down, I believed we had the pace. I just needed to focus on doing my job, and we’d be competitive."

Lindblad progressed to Q3 alongside Lawson, marking a significant turnaround for Racing Bulls after a challenging start in Bahrain. The team celebrated having both cars in the top 10, a result that exceeded internal expectations.

"The team have done a phenomenal job," Lindblad added. "It's really impressive to have two cars in Q3, especially from where we were in Bahrain. I think it was much more than mine and the team’s expectations, so I’m extremely happy and just can’t wait for tomorrow."

Despite his composure during the session, Lindblad faced a heart-stopping moment at the end of Q2 when he encountered slow-moving traffic ahead of the pit entry. Gabriel Bortoleto’s Audi had suffered a mechanical issue, and alongside his teammate Lawson, created a bottleneck that forced Lindblad to take evasive action.

"It was a bit scary," he admitted. "I’ll review with the team to see if there was anything I could have done differently, but thankfully we got through it unscathed."

On the other side of the garage, Lawson echoed his teammate’s optimism. Though he struggled initially in Qualifying—locking up and making mistakes—he managed to pull together a strong final lap.

"Honestly, where we thought we’d be this weekend was probably not here, so I’m pretty happy," the New Zealander said. "The start of Quali was quite rough, but I pieced it together towards the end. We saved a new set of soft tyres for the race, which is a big plus."

Lawson also emphasized caution: "Two cars in Q3 is very positive, but tomorrow’s a long race. These new cars haven’t always been the most reliable, so we’ll see how it unfolds."

With both Racing Bulls drivers starting in the top 10 and fresh tyres in reserve, the team is poised for a potentially historic debut race result. As the F1 world turns its attention to Sunday’s grand prix, all eyes will be on Lindblad—now no longer just a promising rookie, but a genuine contender on race day.
