Rishabh Pant steps down as LSG captain
Rishabh Pant Resigns as LSG Captain
Rishabh Pant has officially stepped down as the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) following a difficult two seasons with the franchise. The IPL team confirmed Pant's resignation via a post on X, stating they have accepted his request to relinquish the leadership role. This decision comes after LSG's poor performance in the 2026 season, where they finished at the bottom of the points table with just four wins and 10 defeats.
Leadership Transition and Future Plans
LSG Director of Cricket, Tom Moody, expressed gratitude for Pant's contributions as a captain and emphasized the need to focus on collective rebuilding and restructuring. 'Rishabh approached the franchise with this request and we have respectfully accepted it,' Moody stated. 'These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective - rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards.'
Pant's Performance and Expectations
Pant joined LSG in a high-profile move, having been acquired for INR 27 crore in the player auction ahead of IPL 2025. He was expected to lead the team to success after previously playing for Delhi Capitals for eight seasons. However, his performance with the bat was inconsistent, scoring 269 runs in his first season and 312 runs in 13 innings this year. Despite a notable century score of 118*, the team's overall performance did not meet expectations, finishing seventh in the 2025 season and 10th in 2026.
Previous Leadership and Future Candidates
Before Pant took over as captain, LSG was led by KL Rahul for three seasons since their inception in 2022. During that time, the team achieved two playoff finishes and one seventh-place finish. The decision to replace Rahul with Pant was made to reset the team, but it appears that the results did not align with the franchise's goals. Now, LSG has several potential captains in their squad, including Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, and Nicholas Pooran, who have experience leading teams in various formats and competitions.
As LSG looks to the future, the challenge will be to find a leader who can inspire the team and guide them back to competitiveness in the IPL. The franchise's next steps will be crucial in determining their trajectory in the coming seasons.
