Costacurta Dismisses Milan Scudetto Talk Despite Eight-Game Unbeaten Start: 'A Team With Promise, But Not a Title Team'

Milan are beginning to show promising signs under head coach Ruben Amorim, but it remains too soon to start talking about the Rossoneri as serious contenders for the Serie A title. That is the verdict of club legend Alessandro Costacurta, who was on punditry duty as Milan bounced back from a disappointing Europa League defeat against AFC Bournemouth last week by winning 2-0 away at Udinese on Sunday night.

Milan players celebrate during their Serie A victory

The result left Milan unbeaten after eight matches of the 2026-27 Serie A season, drawing them level on points with third-placed Roma and four points behind the top two of Inter and Lazio. Remarkably, Inter, Lazio and Roma are also still unbeaten, marking the first time in history that four sides have gone eight matches without defeat at the start of a new Serie A campaign.

Costacurta's verdict from the Sky studio

Speaking on Sky during the Udinese game, Costacurta praised the direction in which Amorim is taking the team but stopped short of declaring Milan championship material.

“I’m seeing players who are following their coach in a very particular way,” said Costacurta (via Milannews.it). “I like the attitude they’re showing on the pitch. However, I’m still not seeing a Scudetto team. I think there are a couple of other sides ahead of them at the moment, but it’s really early and this is a team that is showing promise.

“That’s what I see, a team with promise. A lot of running forwards. What I’m noticing is this offensive drive, not just when they have to recover the ball, but also when they’re trying to build. I believe that this is the biggest difference they’ve shown so far. They go at it all the time.”

The Bartesaghi breakthrough

Amorim has experimented with several different formations and systems since arriving at Milan and has not been afraid to chop and change his starting XI. One player who has had to be patient for opportunities is Davide Bartesaghi, who was named one of the players of the match against Udinese.

“Bartesaghi had a wonderful game,” Costacurta said. “I was enthusiastic about his performance because he got himself involved so much and always did so with quality. It seems like that’s the plan: attack whether you’re on or off the ball.”

For now, Costacurta’s assessment strikes a measured tone: Milan are trending in the right direction, but the Scudetto conversation will have to wait.
