Boniek slams Juventus: 'I don't see a team of champions, just good players'

Boniek questions Juventus' title credentials after Lecce win

Former Juventus forward Zbigniew Boniek has launched a scathing critique of the current Bianconeri side, insisting they are no longer serious contenders for the Scudetto and lack the quality of their illustrious predecessors.

Speaking to Radio Anch'io Sport — as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport — a day after Juventus' 2-0 victory at Lecce, Boniek did not hold back. “I see and hear various critics, some who want Conte, some who criticise Spalletti. I’ll just say that when I watch Juventus, I don’t see a team of champions, just good players. And that makes the difference,” he said.

“Today they’re not at the front of the Scudetto race, and you can see that in how they suffer in Europe.”

Little to celebrate from Lecce

The win at Lecce ended a 35-day wait for a league victory and lifted the Bianconeri up to seventh in the table with 14 points. Weston McKennie and Douglas Luiz struck in the first half to secure the three points, but Boniek was unimpressed by the manner of the performance.

“The first goal came from a free kick, somewhat by chance, with the goalkeeper fooled by McKennie. It’s not as if they dominated. In the past they had more quality,” he noted.

According to FotMob player data fetched on 2026-10-25, Weston McKennie has made five appearances with one goal in Serie A 2026-27, while Douglas Luiz has eight appearances, one goal and one assist in the same campaign.

Joke at Spalletti's expense

Boniek also poked fun at coach Luciano Spalletti’s famously convoluted way of speaking. “He’s very demanding and particular. I’ve been in Italy for 44 years, and when I hear him speak on TV I have to get the dictionary out to understand what he’s saying.”

A strained relationship with Turin

The Pole won the Scudetto and the European Cup during three seasons in Turin in the 1980s, but his relationship with the club has been tense since the Calciopoli era, when he strongly criticised the management of Luciano Moggi.

FIGC Hall of Fame event

In 2010, Boniek was voted among 50 former players to receive a star at the new Juventus Stadium. However, after protests from supporters’ groups, the club suspended his award and held a new vote, with Edgar Davids ultimately taking the final star.

“I’m not here to criticise my old team. Without criticising them, they gave me a star at the Stadium and then took it away,” Boniek said. “I’ll stop there.”
