'Last Year, I Played': Moeen Ali Opens Up on Leaving IPL for PSL Opportunity

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has made a significant career decision by choosing to play in the 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL) over a return to the Indian Premier League (IPL). At 38, Alis move marks a growing trend among veteran international cricketers who are prioritizing consistent game time and personal well-being in the twilight of their careers.

With the IPL and PSL schedules increasingly overlapping, players are being forced to make tough choices. For Moeen, the decision was driven by the need for regular involvement on the field. Im 38 now, and I still want to play, do well, and extend my career as much as possible, he said in a recent interview on the ARY Podcast. Its a shorter competition, which works better for my family and me.

Leaving the IPL Behind

Alis decision follows a disappointing IPL 2025 season with the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he managed just 5 runs across six matches and took six wickets. Despite his bowling contributions, he was benched mid-tournament and only batted twice. Last year in the IPL, I played only half the games and barely got to bat, Moeen reflected. At this stage, I want to be out there; I want to bat. I feel like Im playing good cricket towards the back end of my career, and I just want to keep going.

Karachi Kings Sign Key All-Rounder

Moeen was signed directly by Karachi Kings ahead of PSL 2026 for a reported PKR 6.44 crore ($230,000), a testament to his enduring value in T20 cricket. This marks his return to the PSL after a successful stint with Multan Sultans, with whom he won the 2021 title.

The franchise views him as a crucial addition to both their batting depth and spin attack. Ali has primarily featured in the middle order (No. 57), delivering a standout performance with an unbeaten 48 off 29 balls in the season opener against Quetta Gladiators. With the ball, he has remained effective, notably taking 2 for 31 against Lahore Qalandars. In his most recent outing against Islamabad United on April 16, he scored 8 runs and claimed a wicket.

A Broader Shift in Player Priorities

Moeens decision highlights a broader shift in how experienced players are approaching the latter stages of their careers. Factors such as guaranteed playing time, role clarity, and career longevity are now outweighing traditional prestige or higher-profile leagues.

Youre never guaranteed a place anywhere, even here, but I just want to enjoy my cricket as much as I can, Moeen said. Ive always wanted to experience the PSL, but unfortunately, it slightly clashes with the IPL.

In addition to his PSL commitments, Moeen recently reversed his domestic retirement to sign a T20 Blast-only contract with Yorkshire for the 2026 English season. This dual focus underscores his determination to stay active in competitive cricket while maintaining a sustainable workload.

As more seasoned players evaluate their options beyond the IPL, Moeen Alis journey could pave the way for a new wave of international stars embracing opportunities in leagues like the PSL, where playing time and enjoyment take center stage.
