'Not a secret anymore': Unhappy Abhishek Sharma explores SRH exit, but IPL landing spots are scarce
NEW DELHI: Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma, the World No. 2 T20 batter and arguably the hottest property in the shortest format right now, is understood to be exploring a move away from the franchise as the IPL retention and release deadline approaches, TimesofIndia.com can confirm. Informal dialogue has already taken place with multiple franchises, though nothing substantial has materialised yet.
Retention and release discussions are underway across the league with the deadline looming, and every franchise has just over a month to freeze its core before the mini-auction in December. Within that window, the left-handed opener has emerged as the single biggest talking point of the cycle.
Captaincy call at the heart of the unrest
The friction stems from SRH's decision to hand the captaincy to Ishan Kishan last season, a call that has left the relationship tense ever since. With Pat Cummins likely to remain unavailable due to an intense international calendar in 2027, the franchise is keen to build around Kishan — a move that has left Sharma, who has been with the team since 2019 and clearly harboured captaincy ambitions of his own, deeply unsettled.
"It's not a secret anymore that Abhishek Sharma is unhappy at SRH since the captaincy went to Ishan Kishan. He has been with the franchise for a long time and clearly had captaincy ambitions. Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings were being explored as potential destinations, and we can't rule out Delhi Capitals either, since his mentor Yuvraj Singh is part of the set-up now," a well-placed industry source told TimesofIndia.com.
So serious is the situation that Sharma may even settle for a non-captaincy role elsewhere, with the immediate priority appearing to be an exit from the SRH camp altogether.
The big question: where to?
That, however, is easier said than done. With most IPL teams appearing settled on their leadership, genuine captaincy openings are few and far between — Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants were flagged as the two realistic options.
"There are not many captaincy opportunities right now. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are two options, but most other teams appear sorted. So even if SRH and Abhishek agree to part ways, the big question remains: where to? And how will SRH position itself even if they agree? A cash deal? Player trade? Lots of factors," the source added.
SRH push back
Sunrisers Hyderabad have publicly played down the speculation. CEO K Shanmugam, when reached for comment, termed the chatter as "not true", while sources close to the player have maintained that "nothing is happening".
But that has done little to quieten the noise around a batter whose stock has never been higher. As the World No. 2 in T20 cricket, Sharma will continue attracting significant attention in the coming weeks, and the wider IPL ecosystem is keeping a keen eye on developments inside the SRH camp.
The clock is ticking
Many factors must align for a move of this scale to happen, and it could well be delayed. But as things stand, the sense within the league is that the future of the two parties doesn't look too bright — with barely a month left for franchises to lock in their retained cores before the December mini-auction shapes the rest of the market.
