Lewis Hamilton’s title ambitions took another hit at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where a series of setbacks saw him finish in fifth place. Despite showing strong pace throughout the weekend, the Briton was unable to convert Ferrari's performance into a podium finish, attributing the result to a string of personal errors.

The weekend began with promise when Hamilton qualified P2, missing pole position by a mere 0.012 seconds. However, a three-place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri during the final stage of Qualifying forced him into a strategy of "damage limitation." While his choice of soft tyres initially proved effective, his race was derailed by a fierce battle with Max Verstappen and a subsequent five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

Further complications arose under Virtual Safety Car (VSC) conditions, where Hamilton was forced to allow Kimi Antonelli to pass for P3 to avoid additional penalties. These compounding issues eventually dropped him to P5 at the chequered flag.

“Obviously frustrated, disappointed to come away with so little, given the car was good,” Hamilton admitted. “The team did a great job, but ultimately these last few races have been costly with mistakes from myself.”

Reflecting on the first half of the season, Hamilton noted, “It's been OK. It's not been perfect from my side, so I've really got to work hard to try to figure out how I can do better in the second half.”

His teammate, Charles Leclerc, shared the disappointment. Despite starting on the front row, the Monegasque lost positions at the start and struggled with grip levels on the inside of the track. Leclerc finished P4, edging ahead of Hamilton only after the Briton's time penalty was applied.

“We all put the settings of the car to a certain place for the grip we expect, and for whatever reason... we have overestimated the grip that was on the inside,” Leclerc explained, adding that the team needs to analyze why their expectations differed from the reality on track.
