At just 19 years old, Kimi Antonelli has become the focal point of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Mercedes driver currently holds a commanding 50-point lead over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and a 59-point lead over his teammate George Russell.

Antonelli joined Max Verstappen as the only drivers in history to win a race as a teenager, having secured six victories so far this year, including his maiden win in China. His consistency has been described as "rock solid" by Verstappen himself.

"I think, if you look at the front, Kimi has done a really good job," Verstappen remarked during the post-race press conference in Hungary. "As a 19-year-old, so far, I think he's been rock solid. So, that's really impressive to see as an outsider." Lando Norris echoed this sentiment, calling Antonelli a "complete package."

Mercedes Internal Dynamics

While Antonelli thrives, his teammate George Russell has endured a frustrating campaign. Despite four pole positions and two wins, Russell has been plagued by bad luck, including a collision with Lewis Hamilton at the Belgian GP and engine issues in Hungary. Russell admitted to feeling "numb to the disappointment" as his title hopes fade.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff remains cautious about crowning a favorite. "It's too early to say," Wolff warned, pointing to the team's reliability issues. "A DNF or two can just swing massively."
