David Alaba joins Udinese on free transfer following Real Madrid exit

Former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich defender David Alaba has officially joined Serie A side Udinese on a free transfer, signing a contract that runs until the end of the 2026-27 season.

David Alaba completes transfer to Udinese

The 34-year-old Austrian international brings a glittering resume to Italy, having accumulated a vast collection of silverware across his distinguished career. After winning 25 major trophies over 13 years with Bayern Munich, Alaba moved to Real Madrid in 2021, where he added two Champions League titles, two LaLiga crowns, a Copa del Rey, a Supercopa de España, a UEFA Super Cup, a FIFA Club World Cup, and an Intercontinental Cup to his trophy cabinet.

Looking to Rebuild After Injury Struggles

Alaba established himself as a key figure in Madrid's defense early in his tenure, starting in the 2022 Champions League final victory over Liverpool. However, his recent seasons were severely disrupted by injury issues after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture in December 2023, which kept him sidelined for 13 months.

The defender struggled for consistent playing time upon returning, making only 14 appearances in 2024-25 and 16 across all competitions in 2025-26. Now, the veteran center-back is eager to turn the page in Italy.

"I've had a lot of different experiences, and I've won a lot during my career, but one thing hasn't changed. I want to compete and win again," Alaba said upon completing the move. "I still want to achieve something special and that is the mentality I will bring to Udinese."

Defensive Boost for Udinese

Udinese general manager Franco Collavino hailed the arrival of the experienced defender as a major statement of intent for the club.

"The signing of David Alaba is a source of enormous pride for the whole club," Collavino stated. "We're welcoming an established champion, a leader and an exemplary professional. His arrival demonstrates Udinese's desire to grow and compete at the highest levels."

Udinese currently sit 13th in the Serie A table with four points from their opening five matches. Defensive solidity will be high on the agenda for Alaba and his new side, with the team having already conceded 11 league goals this term. Udinese return from the international break on October 12 with an away fixture against Torino.
