Kimi Antonelli could seal maiden F1 world title as early as Singapore — the permutations explained
Kimi Antonelli's stranglehold on the 2026 Formula 1 drivers' championship could become mathematically unbreakable in as little as three rounds' time, with data analysis showing the earliest the Mercedes driver can clinch a maiden world title is Round 17 — the Singapore Grand Prix.
The Italian has topped the standings ever since Round 3 of the campaign in Japan, and his grip on P1 was strengthened considerably with victory last time out at the Spanish Grand Prix. Following the 14th event of the season, Antonelli now sits 81 points clear of closest challenger and Mercedes team-mate George Russell, while third-placed Lewis Hamilton is 101 points adrift.
Antonelli, for his part, is trying not to let the scale of the opportunity distract him, having insisted that thinking about the title is "exactly what I don't want to do".
How many points are still up for grabs?
Nine rounds remain in the 2026 season, one of which — Singapore — is a Sprint weekend. That means the maximum points score still available to a single driver is 233, achieved by winning every remaining Grand Prix as well as the Sprint.
Who can still stop him?
Mathematically, eight drivers besides Antonelli remain in contention for the crown: Russell, Hamilton, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Oscar Piastri, Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson. In practice, the likelihood of those at the lower end of the order taking the title is slim — their chances rest entirely on Antonelli failing to score another point and nobody else exceeding the Italian's current total of 292 points.
Even in that extreme scenario, the earliest Russell could seize the championship would be Sao Paulo. Hamilton, Norris and Leclerc would have to wait until Las Vegas, while Verstappen and Piastri could not be crowned until Qatar.
The Singapore scenario
For Antonelli to wrap up the championship at the earliest possible moment, he would need to win the Azerbaijan and Bahrain Grands Prix before also taking victory in both the Grand Prix and the Sprint at the Marina Bay Street Circuit — all while Russell comes away with no points from any of those events.
Such a run would hand Antonelli an unbeatable total of 375 points, opening a 164-point gap to Russell. With a maximum of 150 points still available after Singapore, the Briton could not mathematically overhaul his team-mate.
If that doesn't happen, what else would do it?
Even without a complete collapse from Russell, the data points to an imminent coronation. If Antonelli and Russell each continued to finish rounds at their median positions from the season so far — Antonelli's average result currently P1, Russell's 3.5 — the earliest the championship could be decided would be Round 19 in Mexico, where Antonelli would build an advantage of 112 points, a gap Russell could not close before the end of the campaign.
"Thinking about the title is exactly what I don't want to do," Antonelli has insisted, despite his commanding position at the top of the standings.
