PCB locks PSL 2027 for March 18–May 2, setting up second straight clash with IPL
PSL 2027 window locked: March 18 to May 2
The Pakistan Super League is heading for another scheduling collision with the Indian Premier League. The Pakistan Cricket Board on Thursday (October 8) confirmed that PSL 12 will begin on March 18, 2027, and run until May 2, putting the tournament on a potential collision course with IPL 2027 for the second successive season. The final has been scheduled for May 2.
The March 18–May 2 window was finalised following consultations with the franchises and other stakeholders at the PSL Governing Council meeting in London on September 1. The league will stay in its current eight-team format — the expanded roster debuted in 2026 — and with the window now locked, a series of key milestones will follow, including direct signings, retentions, the trade window and the player auction.
IPL 2027 eyes an early-March start
While the IPL 2027 itinerary is yet to be officially announced, indications are that the tournament's 20th season could also begin around the middle of March, raising the prospect of the two major T20 leagues once again competing for players, viewers and global attention.
The IPL is actively exploring an earlier start. BCCI secretary Saikia told PTI that the board's governing council is discussing moving the tournament forward from its traditional late-March window, citing both rain and heat concerns late in the season.
"This year, IPL started around March 29 and it was over by May 31," Saikia said. "Only thing which we are discussing is that during the fag end of the tournament after May 15... there is apprehension of having rainfall or pre-monsoon season starting. On the other hand, there is hot weather which is not very conducive either for the players or for the crowds."
"So therefore, there is a discussion going on in BCCI as well as in our IPL governing council regarding whether we can start the tournament a little bit earlier than the fag end of March. From next year, we will make an effort and I have already instructed our general manager (games development) [former India fast bowler Abey Kuruvilla] to look for the windows, whether we can start it by 10th of March and conclude it by 15th of May. So that there are no adverse weather conditions in the run-up to the playoffs and the finals of IPL 2027, which will be the 20th edition."
IPL Governing Council chairman Arun Dhumal had previously indicated that the BCCI was exploring an early-March start with the aim of completing the tournament by mid-May. Dhumal — who, per reporting earlier this month, has confirmed a push to bring the 2027 player auction back to India — has been at the centre of the league's calendar planning, while the board had already locked the fifth season of the Women's Premier League for January 14 to February 7, as announced in September.
Another season, another IPL–PSL tussle
The scheduling overlap could prove particularly significant after the events of the previous season, when several overseas players withdrew from their PSL commitments before joining IPL franchises as replacement players.
- Australian pacer Spencer Johnson had been signed directly by Quetta Gladiators before pulling out of the PSL, citing personal reasons, and subsequently joining Chennai Super Kings as a replacement for Nathan Ellis.
- Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka, who had been signed by Lahore Qalandars, joined Rajasthan Royals as a replacement.
- Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani withdrew from his Islamabad United contract to join Kolkata Knight Riders — and was subsequently handed a two-year ban from the PSL.
PSL builds on a record-breaking 2026
The 2026 season also marked a major shift for the league, with the traditional player draft replaced by an auction for the first time. Peshawar Zalmi ended a nine-year wait for the PSL title by defeating debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen in the final at Gaddafi Stadium — a match that attracted a record crowd of 32,461.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said the league would look to build on the momentum generated by that season.
"HBL PSL 11 showed the world what this league is capable of — thrilling moments that had the whole nation transfixed, record crowds, record broadcasts," Naqvi said. "HBL PSL 12 will raise the bar further. We are committed to delivering another outstanding season and look forward to seeing all eight franchises compete once again for the title."
