Ipswich Town have continued their impressive summer transfer activity by securing the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen from Union Saint-Gilloise. The towering shot-stopper has penned a four-year contract at Portman Road in a deal reportedly worth up to £11 million.

At six foot nine inches, Scherpen could become the tallest player to ever appear in the Premier League. The current record is held by former Manchester City and Sunderland goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, who stands at six foot eight inches.

This marks Ipswich's second goalkeeper signing of the transfer window, following the arrival of 22-year-old Kayne van Oevelen from Volendam earlier this month. Both Dutchmen will compete for the number one spot as the Tractor Boys prepare for their Premier League return.

Scherpen was speaking to the club's website after completing his move, saying: "This is a great opportunity for me to show my qualities and test myself in the best league in the world, so I'm really looking forward to making memories together. I've had great conversations and everything here has been really positive, so it's made me very excited to join Ipswich Town. I'm looking forward to meeting my team-mates and can't wait to meet the fans and get started."

The 23-year-old keeper enjoyed an exceptional season with Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian Pro League last term, keeping a division-high 16 clean sheets while conceding just 20 goals in 32 appearances. His remarkable save percentage of 74.68% was the best of any goalkeeper to play at least 20 games in the Belgian top flight, helping Union SG finish as runners-up to Club Brugge.

With this signing, Ipswich have now made eight signings ahead of their return to the Premier League. The club has also acquired Emersonn, Abdul Fatawu, Issa Diop, Daizen Maeda, Chuba Akpom, Cedric Kipre, and Kayne van Oevelen as they look to establish themselves back in the top tier of English football.
