Riverside Ground: Durham’s modern cricket venue earns its place in England’s Test history

Riverside Ground’s rise at Chester-le-Street

The Riverside Ground, home of cricket in Chester-le-Street, is one of England’s newer international venues. Established in 1995, the ground has a reported seating capacity of 5,000 and has steadily built its reputation despite its comparatively recent arrival on the cricket map.

The venue’s first notable tie came when Durham faced the touring New Zealanders in 1992. Development accelerated afterward, and the ground received a major international opportunity during the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup.

World Cup debut followed by Test status

Riverside Ground hosted its first One-Day International during the 1999 World Cup, when Pakistan played Scotland. Four years later, England and Zimbabwe contested the venue’s first Test in 2003.

That match gave the ground a significant place in English cricket history: it became the first new Test venue in England since 1902. Although it remains younger and less established than the country’s traditional stadiums, its progression from a developing regional ground to an international venue underlines its steady growth.
