BCCI to stage grand year-long centenary celebrations from December 2027 as board turns 100 in 2028

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will complete 100 years in 2028, and the Indian cricket board is already planning a celebration to match the landmark. During the final phase of its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the BCCI headquarters, an influential administrator raised the topic of the board's centenary, and the office bearers unanimously agreed to stage grand celebrations spread across an entire year, beginning in December 2027. A committee is set to be formed to organise the festivities.

"The General Body has initiated the process for the BCCI centenary celebrations in 2028. The centenary will be celebrated through a year-long programme, commencing in December 2027 continuing through 2028, marking a landmark milestone in the history of Indian Cricket," read the media advisory issued after the meeting.

'100 years is no ordinary feat'

The administrator who brought the proposal to the floor urged the board to think beyond Indian shores, arguing that the BCCI's role in the growth of cricket in different regions around the world deserved a global celebration. "We are talking about the BCCI. 100 years is no ordinary feat. It deserves the grandest celebration which needs careful consideration. Not a one-off affair. We should think about taking it global and plan as early as December 2027," the administrator told the gathering at the BCCI headquarters on Friday.

The call for careful consideration suggests the board views the centenary not as a single marquee event but as a sustained, multi-platform programme — one that could extend its reach to the regions where Indian cricket's influence has helped the game grow.

IPL's 20th edition to get grand treatment too

The centenary will not be the only milestone on the board's calendar. The AGM also decided that the 2027 edition of the Indian Premier League — the cash-rich league's 20th — will be celebrated in a grand way. "The General Body unanimously took a call to celebrate the upcoming 20th edition of IPL in 2027 in a grand way," read another statement in the ten-point advisory.

With the IPL's 20th season in 2027 flowing straight into the board's centenary year in 2028, Indian cricket is set for nearly two years of sustained festivities — a fitting build-up, administrators believe, for a body that has grown into one of the most powerful forces in world cricket since its founding a century ago.
