Totti Admits Real Madrid Regret: 'I Might Have Won the Ballon d'Or'
Roma legend opens up on the road not taken
Francesco Totti has admitted he carries a flicker of regret over the decision that defined his career: turning down Real Madrid in the prime of his life as a footballer.
The former Roma captain, who spent his entire playing career with the Giallorossi, spoke candidly about the offers he received to leave the Italian capital in an in-depth interview with Corriere della Sera, published on Sunday.
He has previously confirmed that he came close to swapping Roma for Madrid in the summer of 2004, only to opt to stay with his boyhood club.
'They weren't called the Galacticos for nothing'
Totti insisted the decision does not haunt him, but conceded that a move to the Bernabeu might have brought greater individual recognition.
"I'm not repentant about it, but there was a bit of regret," he said. "In 2004, they weren't called the Galacticos for nothing, with Beckham, Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo. I would have won everything there, maybe even the Ballon d'Or. But this is how it went. The supporters love me and I love them, and I still feel that way."
The 2004-05 Real Madrid squad Totti refers to featured a galaxy of global stars, and he believes a spell among them could have added the sport's most prestigious individual prize to a cabinet already brimming with honours.
'Roma is my home, it was love at first sight'
Any sense of a missed opportunity is outweighed by the bond Totti shares with the Roma faithful, a relationship he describes as the defining thread of his life in football.
"Roma is my home, it was love at first sight," he said.
"People on the street have always shown me their affection. I recognise that I've had an incredible story here. You [supporters] came with me, you always supported me from the Curva. As far as I'm concerned, all I can say is thank you. Sometimes I get nostalgic thinking about the pitch, I miss it all."
Totti's loyalty produced a remarkable body of work: 786 appearances for Roma across all competitions, including 250 goals in 619 Serie A outings.
Turning down Genoa and Como at 48
The interview also revisited a revelation from Totti's autobiography, in which he disclosed that two years ago, at the age of 48, he received offers to return to Serie A from two clubs: Como and Genoa.
He says he rejected them not because of his age or physical condition, but purely out of devotion to Roma.
"If it were up to me, I would go out there on Saturday. But I know that can't happen unfortunately," he said.
"When I turned 48, I thought, what a great achievement, Genoa and Como [were interested]. Honestly, I thought about it. My heart and my head said two different things. I followed my heart and said no. I only wore one shirt my whole life and it had to stay that way."
Context: Rome's date with Madrid
Totti's reflections on Real Madrid land at a moment when the Spanish giants are a live fixture on the calendar for the Italian capital. As reported on 14 October 2026, Roma were preparing to face Real Madrid in the Champions League, with Gian Piero Gasperini joking about Jose Mourinho's spending power ahead of the meeting. Real Madrid arrived in Rome on the back of a 2-1 win over Inter in their Champions League opener that campaign.
For further context, reporting dated 25 September 2026 noted that the next Ballon d'Or winner — the very prize Totti says he might have claimed in Madrid — was set to be revealed at the award's anniversary ceremony.
