'Mbappe is not a dictator' – Deschamps defends France captain against online criticism

France manager Didier Deschamps has launched a passionate defense of Kylian Mbappe against critics who have compared the national team captain to a "dictator" throughout the 2026 World Cup.

Following France's hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the round of 16, Deschamps expressed his frustration with the online narrative surrounding his star player, who has been depicted in social media images as wielding excessive power both at Real Madrid and within the France camp.

"You guys make Kylian Mbappe seem like a dictator… the reality is the opposite," Deschamps said after the match. "His public image does not reflect reality at all. Kylian has always been mature and the whole team follows him. I am so happy to have Kylian as captain. Whenever he speaks on and off the pitch, he represents the whole group."

Kylian Mbappe in action for France at the 2026 World Cup

Mbappe's performances at the 2026 World Cup have been nothing short of spectacular. The France captain scored a decisive penalty against Paraguay to seal his team's place in the quarter-finals, taking his tally to seven goals in five matches in the tournament. He now has 19 World Cup goals in total, putting him just one goal behind all-time record holder Lionel Messi.

Remarkably, 11 of those goals have come in knockout stages, highlighting Mbappe's ability to deliver on the biggest stage. The 27-year-old is currently tied with his former Paris Saint-Germain teammate Messi in the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot race.

Interestingly, both Mbappe and Messi are the two outfield players who have walked for the highest proportion of their total distance covered at the tournament (minimum 150 minutes played), with Messi at 47% and Mbappe at 45%.

This represents France's fourth consecutive World Cup at which they have reached at least the quarter-finals under Deschamps' guidance, following their runs in 2014, 2018, and 2022. Before this remarkable streak, France had only reached the quarter-finals five times in their entire World Cup history (1938, 1958, 1986, 1998, and 2006).

As France prepare to face their next opponents in the quarter-finals, Deschamps' comments underscore the unity within the squad and his unwavering support for a player who continues to rewrite World Cup history.
