Flick Urges Barcelona to Maintain Champions League Intensity in Upcoming LaLiga Clash Against Rayo Vallecano
Barcelona's attention shifts back to LaLiga this weekend, with league leaders hosting Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou. Manager Hansi Flick has emphasized the importance of maintaining the same level of performance that propelled his team to a resounding 7-2 victory over Newcastle United in the Champions League last-16 second leg, securing an 8-3 aggregate win and advancing to a quarter-final matchup against Atletico Madrid.

The Blaugrana sit four points clear at the top of LaLiga standings, with second-placed Real Madrid set to face rivals Atletico Madrid on the same day before the international break. Barcelona have enjoyed a remarkable season, winning 23 of their 28 LaLiga matches in 2025-26 (with 1 draw and 4 losses), marking their campaign with the fewest draws at this stage in top-flight history.
Following the dominant display against Newcastle, Flick is keen to see his players replicate that intensity. "It’s very important to maintain our level," said Flick. "Seeing the players enjoy playing football the way they did against Newcastle was really great."
Rayo Vallecano, known for their consistent style whether at home or away, present a challenging opponent. "Rayo tends to play the same at home and away. They are an experienced group with a lot of intensity, and that’s what we expect to face tomorrow," added the Barcelona boss.
Looking ahead, Barcelona face Atletico twice post-international break—first in LaLiga, then in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. They have already met Diego Simeone's side three times this season (once in LaLiga and twice in the Copa del Rey), securing two wins and one loss.
Flick views the upcoming international break positively for team recovery. "We'll train during the international break, but we'll give a few days of rest to those who stay," he noted. "It's also positive for those who leave. It's good to disconnect from the routine to return with more energy."
Players to Watch
Barcelona – Raphinha: The winger has notched 10 goals in LaLiga for Barcelona for the second straight season (18 in 2024-25 and 11 so far this campaign). Only Robert Lewandowski (38 goals) has outscored him among Barca players over the last two league seasons (Raphinha with 29).
Rayo Vallecano – Florian Lejeune: The defender provided an assist in Rayo's last LaLiga outing against Levante, snapping his longest goal involvement drought for the club in the top flight (28 games).
Match Prediction and Stats
Barcelona are favored to win, with Opta predicting a 71.3% chance of victory, 16.3% for a draw, and 12.3% for Rayo. At home, Barca are on their second-longest unbeaten streak without conceding against Rayo in LaLiga (three games: W2 D1), following a four-match run from 1993-1997 (W4).
Rayo, however, have struggled on the road, winless in their last eight away LaLiga matches (D3 L5)—their longest such streak since May 2024 (nine games: D3 L6). Despite Barcelona's historical dominance, including 13 straight LaLiga wins against Rayo from May 2003 to March 2019, they've only won three of the last nine encounters (D3 L3). Rayo is the team against whom Barca have dropped the most points since 2021-22 (six games).
The visitors boast impressive recent form in attack, scoring in their last eight LaLiga games (12 goals)—their best streak since a 10-match run from December 2024 to February 2025 (14 goals).
