Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany taken to hospital after collapsing at training ground

Kompany collapses and is taken to hospital

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany required medical attention on Friday after collapsing at the end of a training session at the club's Säbener Straße training ground. The Belgian had been watching the second team train when he was affected.

According to Sky Sports, a rescue helicopter landed at the training ground to take him to hospital, while another report said he was taken away by a Munich ambulance. Kompany is currently undergoing a thorough examination in hospital and will remain under medical care.

Coaching staff to take over

For the time being, his coaching staff will manage all training and match-related operations. Bayern's director of sport, Max Eberl, said: "Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority. At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. His coaching staff - in whom we have complete confidence - will take over his duties. Everyone at Bayern wishes Vinnie a quick recovery."

Health concerns before Arsenal clash

The news comes after Kompany had already been dealing with health issues in recent days. He missed Bayern's final training session and press conference ahead of the Champions League clash with Arsenal due to a viral infection, with assistant coach Aaron Danks stepping in at the press conference.

Kompany also sat through the entire 90 minutes of Bayern's 6-1 Bundesliga win over RB Leipzig, where Eberl explained that the Belgian had been ill and was dealing with a hip problem that made moving from the dressing room to the pitchside slow and uncomfortable. Sky Sports reported that he had already felt pain in his legs before the Arsenal match due to the virus and the resulting hip problems.

Kompany still led his team from the dugout normally for the Champions League fixture against Arsenal, which was played after the Leipzig match.
