Stewards Issue Verdicts After Silverstone Sprint: Lawson Escapes Penalty, Hulkenberg Penalized

Following the conclusion of the 100km Sprint dash at the British Grand Prix, race stewards have released their final verdicts regarding two separate incidents involving Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg.

Lawson Receives Warning After Hadjar Clash

Liam Lawson, driving for Racing Bulls, found himself under investigation after a defensive maneuver while battling for eighth place. Isack Hadjar, driving a Red Bull, had been chasing Lawson down and attempted to overtake on the inside. Lawson cut across to defend his position, a move that prompted frustrated radio messages from the Frenchman.

During the hearing, Lawson argued that he had not yet commenced braking and that the movement was part of his deceleration and preparation for the corner. Hadjar, conversely, noted that while the move was "sharp," sufficient room was left to avoid contact and believed the incident did not merit a penalty, citing different energy levels between the cars which made judging closing speed difficult.

The stewards ultimately decided that while the move was "marginally over the limit of what is acceptable when defending into a corner," it did not warrant a time penalty. As a result, Lawson was issued a formal warning and retains his eighth-place finish and the accompanying point.

Hulkenberg Dropped to P15 Following Time Penalty

In a separate investigation, Nico Hulkenberg was penalized for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. The incident occurred on Lap 1 at Turn 9 while Hulkenberg was defending against Haas driver Esteban Ocon.

Although the stewards acknowledged that Hulkenberg was attempting to avoid a collision with Ocon, they determined that the German driver had "carried excessive speed into the corner," which was the primary cause for the car leaving the track. Because Hulkenberg did not immediately concede the position, the stewards ruled that he gained a lasting advantage.

Consequently, Hulkenberg was handed a five-second time penalty, which dropped him from his initial finishing position of P13 down to P15.
