Luis Enrique's Rotation Gamble Leaves PSG Chasing Form Before Champions League Trip to City

Paris Saint-Germain arrive at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday chasing a third consecutive Champions League crown, but the two-time holders do so with questions swirling about their domestic form and Luis Enrique's squad management.

A stuttering start at home

PSG's Ligue 1 campaign has been far from convincing. Reporting dated 13 October 2026 noted that Luis Enrique has leaned heavily on his senior players in domestic matches so they arrive fresher for major European fixtures — a gamble that faltered against Le Mans, where the late intervention of four senior players underlined the risk in relying on the reserves to handle that workload.

Guardian reporting dated 12 October 2026 added that, after six league games in the 2026-27 season, the club sat sixth on 11 points, with three wins, two draws and one defeat, and that none of their recent wins had been especially convincing. Luis Enrique has previously pushed back against what he sees as extreme reactions to his side's results.

The champions have shown flickers of their best along the way. On 21 September 2026, Marquinhos scored the winner as PSG went to the Velodrome and beat rivals Marseille 2-1, ending Ligue 1's run of home victories on that weekend.

Europe has offered the comfort

For all the noise around their league form, PSG remain a formidable force on the continent. They are unbeaten in their last 11 Champions League games (W7 D4) — only once have they had a longer run without defeat in the competition, a 13-match stretch between October 2012 and November 2013.

They began their defence of the trophy, and their bid for a third straight title, with an emphatic 6-1 hammering of Slovan Bratislava last month. In that game, former City forward Ferran Torres became the first player to score a hat-trick on their Champions League debut for a side since Robert Lewandowski did so for Barcelona against Viktoria Plzen in September 2022.

PSG also recorded the most high turnovers (14) and shot-ending high turnovers (seven) of any side on matchday one of the new Champions League campaign, while boasting the highest possession share (72.1%). Their record against English clubs is another encouraging sign: they are unbeaten in nine straight games against English sides in Europe (W7 D2) and could become just the second team to reach 10 without defeat, after Real Madrid's 11-game run between 2011 and 2017.

Midfield the battleground

Luis Enrique's men will now be tested by Manchester City, a side Opta's supercomputer makes moderate favourites (42.2% to PSG's 34.0%, with a 23.8% chance of a draw) across 10,000 pre-match simulations. Much may hinge on the midfield, where Vitinha has set the standard: since the start of last season, he leads all midfielders in the Champions League for completed passes (1,703), line-breaking passes (327) and possession won (106 times).
