F1 engine compression ratio row deepens as rival manufacturers push supermajority vote

Why F1's boiling drama over engine compression ratios matters for the 2026 season

A political firestorm has been brewing in Formula 1 over whether engine manufacturers have found a loophole in the new 2026 technical regulations. At the centre of the controversy is the engine cylinder compression ratio, which has dropped from 18:1 to 16:1 for the coming season, and allegations that Mercedes and Red Bull may have found a way to improve performance through their interpretation of the rules.

The dispute centres on how much the engine can squeeze fuel before burning it, which sparks a chain reaction. The more the engine compresses the fuel, the hotter it becomes and the more power it can produce — though pushing it too far becomes counterproductive. Crucially, the ratio is measured for compliance at ambient temperature, and it is believed Mercedes and Red Bull may have found a way to increase it to the previous 18:1 level when the cars' temperatures skyrocket on track, unlocking extra performance. Given this season's engine overhaul, with power units now relying on a near 50/50 split between internal combustion and electric power, the compression ratio matters more than ever.

Breaking down the loophole

Inside the internal combustion engine are the six cylinders in question. The compression ratio measures how much the fuel can be compressed in the confined space before ignition: the first number is the cylinder's volume when the piston is at its lowest point, while the second is the volume at its highest stroke. A higher ratio allows the engine to squeeze more of the air-fuel mixture and extract more power from the same amount of fuel, with fuel flow restricted to a maximum energy flow of around 3,000 megajoules per hour.

Heading into the season the ratio fell from 18:1 to 16:1 as part of the regulatory overhaul, partly to make power unit development easier for new manufacturers. But during the off-season, rumours circulated that some teams might have found a workaround. It comes down to when scrutineers check the ratio. Under Article C5.4.3, measurements are taken "at ambient temperature" — cooler than when the engine is running. The suspicion is that Mercedes and Red Bull comply with the rules when stationary and cool during checks, but reach 18:1 when running hotter on track, an advantage worth potentially a few tenths of a second per lap depending on the circuit.

There are early signs the field is not as tight as in 2025. Carlos Sainz said in Williams' post-Day 3 testing recap: "It is clear that the gap between teams is not as tight as last year, at least not for now." And the stakes extend beyond two teams — Mercedes supplies engines to Alpine, Williams and McLaren, while Red Bull powers itself and Racing Bulls.

What the paddock had to say

The FIA said it has been aware of the issue since it emerged late last year, and acknowledged the topic is being actively discussed among power unit manufacturers, noting "the new limit naturally raises questions about interpretation and compliance." However, it added that "adjustments to the regulations or measurement procedures can be considered for the future," leaving the door open without confirming a change.

Rival manufacturers have pressed the FIA to close the loophole so the 16:1 limit also applies when engines are hot. In the last two weeks Red Bull changed its position, aligning with Ferrari, Audi and Honda — leaving four of five manufacturers in agreement and potentially able to force a rule change with a supermajority supported by Formula One Management. The four OEMs wanted the change before the Australian Grand Prix, with first practice on March 6.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff defended his outfit's approach, describing F1 as a sport "full of surprises" and noting "there's never a situation where you can say you're sure about anything." He added: "All along the process, when you design an engine, you're keeping the FIA very close to the decisions you make, and that's what we did. We have had all the assurances that what we did was according to the rule."

FIA single seater director Nikolas Tombazis framed the debate in broader terms. "It's impossible when we have new rules not to have such areas of discussion. That's always been the case," he said. "We are determined to make this a championship of competition between the best drivers, the best engineers, the teams, but not a championship of rule interpretation... who's a smarter rule interpreter."

Audi team principal Jonathan Wheatley said: "I know that each power unit manufacturer is working very closely with the FIA on this topic, and we trust 100 percent in their ability to manage this right the way through this entire set of technical regulations." Red Bull's Laurent Mekies added: "The simple truth is that we don't really mind if the regs goes left, if the regs goes right. What we absolutely want, to Jonathan's point, is clarity on what we can do and what we cannot do... it will come to a point very quickly where any competitive advantage, whether it is one, two, three, whatever number of tenths (of a second), is going to make a difference."

Williams' James Vowles, by contrast, thought the furore was overstated, calling it "just noise" and suggesting "there's probably a misunderstanding of just how significant it is."

The vote and the road ahead

Real power rests with the Power Unit Advisory Committee, a separate group from the F1 Commission comprising the five manufacturers, FOM and the FIA, which has so far failed to reach a resolution. The FIA has now announced a proposed change is open for e-voting among power unit manufacturers, with results expected within about 10 days — closing before the March 1 homologation date, and requiring final approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

"Over recent weeks and months, the FIA and the Power Unit Manufacturers have collaboratively developed a methodology to quantify how the compression ratio changes from ambient to operating conditions," the FIA said. "Following validation of this approach, a proposal has been submitted whereby, from 1 August 2026, compliance with the compression ratio limit must be demonstrated not only at ambient conditions, but also at a representative operating temperature of 130°C."

Whether a supermajority — four of five manufacturers plus the FIA and FOM — pushes the change through remains to be seen, and engineering ingenuity means the engine war is far from settled.
