F1 enters 'Overtake Mode' era as 2026 technical overhaul transforms racing
Formula 1 is preparing for one of the most significant technical regulation overhauls in its history heading into the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. The shift involves a complete redesign of car aerodynamics and a move toward engines that rely more heavily on electrical power, fundamentally altering how drivers pass one another on the track.
The End of DRS and the Rise of Active Aero
Since 2011, fans have been familiar with the Drag Reduction System (DRS), where a rear wing flap opened to increase speed for a chasing car. In 2026, DRS is replaced by a more comprehensive 'active aero' system. While it still utilizes movable rear wing flaps, the front wings will now also change shape.
Unlike the previous system, this new active aero can be used by any driver on a straight to improve energy efficiency, regardless of whether they are within one second of a competitor. Oscar Piastri clarified the distinction, stating, “Before, it was an overtaking aid. Now it’s just to reduce drag and take some of the limitation away from the (engine)... It’s just a different purpose.”
Understanding 'Overtake Mode'
To maintain the spirit of competition, F1 has introduced Overtake Mode. Similar to a speed boost in a video game, it provides a brief burst of electrical energy to a chasing car. Drivers must be within one second of the car ahead at a detection point to activate it.
The FIA explains that this system creates a tactical advantage: the leading car's energy deployment tapers off after 290km/h to harvest energy, while the chasing car can maintain a full 350kW of power up to 337km/h. This creates a window of opportunity for the attacker to push past the leader.
'Speed Chess': The Strategic Cost of Passing
The new system has led Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli to describe 2026 racing as “speed chess,” noting that drivers must be two steps ahead to predict and force the opponent's hand. However, this tactical depth comes with a physical cost.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc expressed concerns during preseason testing in Bahrain, noting that overtaking has become “extremely difficult” because of the energy drain. “The price is a lot more costly than it was in the past,” Leclerc warned, explaining that the electrical energy required to overtake makes it harder to pull away from a rival after a successful pass.
Technical Challenges and Driver Concerns
The 2026 cars feature an MGU-K (energy recovery system) that is three times more powerful than the 2025 versions. Williams team principal James Vowles noted that this allows for much more dynamic energy management, where drivers can choose to hold back deployment through certain corner sequences to use it more effectively later.
Despite the power, some team leaders are wary. McLaren principal Andrea Stella highlighted that during Bahrain tests, drivers found it difficult to exploit the extra energy to actually complete passes. George Russell added that the effectiveness of Overtake Mode will likely vary by circuit, suggesting that on tracks with only one long straight, the advantage may be minimized if all cars deploy maximum power simultaneously.
