Brighton 0 Manchester United 3: How did Fernandes make Premier League history? What is possible next season?
Bruno Fernandes Makes Premier League History
Bruno Fernandes etched his name into Premier League history during Manchester United's 3-0 win over Brighton on the final day of the 2025-26 season. With an assist for Patrick Dorgu's opening goal, Fernandes surpassed Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne to record 21 assists in a single season, a new record. This achievement cements his status as one of the league's most creative players and earned him the Premier League Player of the Season award.

"Fernandes would always prioritise silverware over records and awards — he would take leading United to a 21st top-flight league title over this 21st assist any day of the week," said Mark Critchley in The Athletic. Nevertheless, the newly crowned Player of the Season is finally receiving the individual recognition his creative genius deserves.
The victory also marked Michael Carrick's first win as Manchester United's permanent head coach. Carrick, who took over in January after Ruben Amorim's departure, has guided the team to 12 wins in 17 games, earning 2.29 points per game — the best average of any Premier League manager this season and the highest for a United boss since Alex Ferguson’s final season in 2012-13. This impressive record has led to speculation about the club's potential for next season.
What Lies Ahead for Manchester United?
With a third-place finish secured and 71 points, Manchester United's season ended on a high note. Carrick's leadership has sparked optimism among fans about the club's future. His points per game average suggests a potential for 87 points over a full season — a pace that would outstrip champions Arsenal's performance this season.
However, the optimism is tempered by the reality that United's success this season was partly due to favorable scheduling, with multiple midweek rest days free from European commitments. That luxury won't be available next term, and 17 games still represent a small sample size. Nonetheless, the dramatic turnaround under Carrick is a reason for cautious optimism.
"The Premier League finds itself in something of a state of flux at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. United’s form over the back half of the season should, with the right additions to the squad, put them in a position to try and take advantage," added Critchley.
Mason Mount's Role in Carrick's Plans
With Casemiro's absence, Carrick faced a decision on who to pair with Kobbie Mainoo in midfield. He opted for Mason Mount, who has struggled to define a consistent role since joining the club. In this match, Mount contributed both in and out of possession, particularly with his marauding run that led to the second goal. His ability to link up with teammates and make decisive plays indicates that he could be a central figure in Carrick's plans moving forward.
United is expected to sign a replacement for Casemiro this summer and potentially add more midfielders to the squad. Carrick's clear preference for Mount in this game suggests he sees the English midfielder as a key contributor in the middle of the park.
