India Secure Crucial Win in Birmingham as Axar Patel Shines in All-Round Display

India Break Losing Streak

India has finally registered a much-needed win on their current tour after suffering a series of losses over the last few weeks. Despite facing significant pressure after losing six consecutive matches across T20Is and other fixtures, the change in format to 50-over cricket saw a shift in fortunes for the visitors.

Axar Patel celebrating his performance in the Birmingham ODI

Axar Patel's Masterclass

The standout performer of the match was Axar Patel, who earned the Player of the Match award following a dominant all-round display. After being out of the ODI setup for a significant period, Patel made a definitive statement to secure his place in the pecking order for the upcoming World Cup in South Africa.

With the ball, Axar struck at a critical juncture to break a century partnership and cleaned up the tail to keep Joe Root's scoring in check. However, it was his batting that truly impressed the management; he formed a century partnership with Washington Sundar to guide India home, finishing with an unbeaten half-century.

England's Struggles and Standouts

England's batting lineup struggled early on, collapsing to 80/5. While Joe Root remained "Mr. Dependable," scoring his fourth successive fifty-plus score in the format, he was often left stranded by reckless strokes from Adil Rashid and Josh Tongue.

The match also highlighted a successful return for 36-year-old Liam Dawson. Batting alongside Root, Dawson showed immense composure to register his maiden fifty in the format, proving his value to the English ODI setup.

On the flip side, England's experiment with Jacob Bethell as an opener failed to launch. Bethell struggled with early movement, taking 13 balls to get off the mark before being dismissed by Gurnoor Brar.

Veteran Failures for India

Despite the overall win, there were concerns regarding India's senior batting core. In a rare occurrence, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma both failed in the same game. Rohit was caught off Sam Curran for a low score, while Kohli fell lbw to Jofra Archer. KL Rahul also failed to steady the ship, chopping a ball onto his stumps for just 1 run, meaning the veteran trio contributed only 17 runs combined.

Despite these hiccups, the contributions of Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Shubman Gill ensured that India could finally celebrate a victory on the tour.
