Müller injury leaves Vancouver’s Western Conference lead under pressure

Vancouver face a test without Müller

Vancouver Whitecaps will be without Thomas Müller for their clash with Los Angeles FC after the forward suffered a hamstring injury in Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat to the Chicago Fire. Head coach Jesper Sørensen did not disclose the severity of the injury or how long Müller is expected to be sidelined.

The setback comes as Vancouver look to steady their season. They remain top of the Western Conference, three points clear of St. Louis City SC and FC Dallas, but have won only two of their last six MLS matches. A 3-3 draw with D.C. United preceded the loss to Chicago, leaving the Whitecaps without a win in their last two.

Sørensen said the squad must cope with the absence through its depth. “That’s why we have more than just 11 players,” he said, adding that difficult periods were a challenge the team could “grow from.”

LAFC turn to interim coach

Los Angeles FC have made a change of their own during the international break, dismissing head coach Marc Dos Santos after a run of one win in 10 regular-season matches. LAFC have slipped to sixth in the West and are nine points behind Vancouver, with three consecutive matches without a victory.

Xavi Tamarit has taken charge on an interim basis. He said he wanted to give the side “very simple but clear concepts” tactically and define clear roles for each player as LAFC seek a stronger finish to the regular season.

Bouanga remains a key threat

Denis Bouanga has been a productive opponent for Vancouver, recording nine goals and seven assists in 15 career appearances against the Whitecaps across all competitions. Vancouver have, however, restricted him to one goal and one assist over their last six meetings.

Mathias Laborda scored Vancouver’s only goal against Chicago. The source notes that his 12 regular-season MLS goals rank behind only Anthony Markanich’s 18 among defenders who have made their league debut since Laborda in 2023.

Prediction favours the hosts

Vancouver are unbeaten in their last four all-competition meetings with LAFC, though their only win in that run came away from home, a 1-0 result in June 2025. The Whitecaps have won only two of 14 all-time away matches against LAFC.

Despite Vancouver’s recent head-to-head record, the preview backs LAFC to win at home. Its Opta win probabilities are 44.8% for LAFC, 26.9% for a draw and 28.3% for Vancouver.
