Sarfaraz Khan Answers India Snub With Unbeaten 139 as Mumbai Tighten Grip on Himachal Pradesh

Sarfaraz Khan produced a commanding reminder of his first-class pedigree on Monday, striking an unbeaten 139 to hand Mumbai control of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group D encounter against Himachal Pradesh at the Luhnu Cricket Ground in Bilaspur.

The 28-year-old responded emphatically after managing just one run in Mumbai's opening-round victory over Chandigarh, compiling his 18th first-class hundred and reaching the close of Day Two unbeaten on 139 off 213 balls, an innings laced with 18 fours. Mumbai finished the day on 398/4, a lead of 258 runs.

A timely statement from domestic cricket's most reliable run-scorer

The knock carried extra weight given Sarfaraz's omission from both India's Test squad and the India A side for the upcoming New Zealand tour. He had been drafted into India's Test squad as an injury replacement for B Sai Sudharsan for the Sri Lanka series in August, but missed out on the New Zealand trip once Sudharsan regained fitness. Sarfaraz has also not turned out for India A since last year's home series against South Africa A.

Going into the match, his first-class average stood at a formidable 62.92 — a figure he only enhanced with Monday's effort.

Lad and Musheer build the platform

While Sarfaraz anchored the innings, Mumbai captain Siddhesh Lad fell agonisingly short of three figures, making 87 off 188 balls with 14 fours and a six. Musheer Khan chipped in with 57 off 137 balls, combining with Lad for a 122-run third-wicket stand.

Lad and Sarfaraz then added 68 for the fourth wicket before the captain was caught at mid-off, bringing wicketkeeper-batter Akash Anand to the crease. Anand remained unbeaten on 58 off 152 balls, and he and Sarfaraz put together an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership worth 176 runs off 306 balls to deflate the Himachal attack.

Mumbai chase a second bonus-point win

Mumbai, the 42-time champions, will look to press home their advantage on Day Three and secure a second outright win with a bonus point, following their innings-and-155-run demolition of Chandigarh in the opening round. That rout, reported on 12 October, was powered by Tushar Deshpande, who claimed a hat-trick as Mumbai skittled Chandigarh for 78 and enforced the follow-on.

With a sizable lead already banked and wickets in hand, Mumbai appear well placed to replicate that dominance in Bilaspur.
