India Beat West Indies by 14 Runs to Take 2-1 T20I Series Lead as Arshdeep Singh and Naman Dhir Deliver
India regained the lead in their five-match T20I series against West Indies with a 14-run victory in the third match on Sunday, moving 2-1 ahead after the visitors had levelled the contest earlier in the series.
Despite losing Tilak Varma in the closing stages to a bizarre run-out, India posted a commanding 223 in their 20 overs. Abhishek Sharma provided the biggest contribution with a blistering 30-ball 69, including five sixes, while Ishan Kishan weighed in with 37 off 18 deliveries before Roston Chase stumped him.
Abhishek and Kishan set the tone
Abhishek and Kishan put on 108 runs off just 40 balls to give India a flying start. Chase would go on to dismiss India captain Shreyas Iyer lbw for one, and the two wickets triggered a mini-collapse as India lost four wickets for 20 runs, slipping to 135/5 before recovering to post 223.
West Indies had successfully chased down a target of 250 in the second T20I, but India's bowlers turned the tables in the third match. Arshdeep Singh picked up three wickets for 44 runs, while Naman Dhir claimed two for 39 as West Indies finished their chase on 209/7.
Dhir breaks the chase open
Pooran scored 42 and Shimron Hetmyer made 43, the pair adding 60 runs for the second wicket to keep West Indies in the hunt. Dhir dismissed both batters to swing the match back in India's favour during the middle overs.
Sherfane Rutherford kept the visitors alive with 32 off 20 balls, and Shamar Springer remained unbeaten on 35 off just 11 deliveries, striking three sixes in the final over against Axar Patel. Ultimately, however, West Indies fell short of the target.
Iyer praises bowlers' belief
After the match, India captain Shreyas Iyer credited the confidence of his bowling attack.
"It was wonderful to see the bowlers being confident," Iyer said. "The clarity was very much visible when I was interacting. They were ready to take up the challenge, and that's what we want."
India had won the series opener by eight wickets in Lucknow before West Indies levelled the contest with a six-wicket victory in Ranchi. Sunday's win put India back in front at 2-1, with the fourth T20I set to be played in Hyderabad on Wednesday.
