Bangladesh and Zimbabwe Open UAE ODI Tri-Series at Zayed Cricket Stadium
Tri-Series Opener Set for Abu Dhabi
Bangladesh and Zimbabwe will raise the curtain on the ODI tri-series in the United Arab Emirates when they meet in Match 1 at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The fixture, part of the Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh tour of UAE 2026, is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. local time on 17 October 2026, with the match yet to begin at the time of writing.
The series forms part of a packed Afghanistan home season staged in the UAE, which the Afghanistan Cricket Board unveiled in September 2026, spanning a one-off Test against Bangladesh, the ODI tri-series, three T20Is and two Tests against Zimbabwe across October and November.
Bangladesh Hold the Edge in Head-to-Head
Historically, Bangladesh have dominated this rivalry in the 50-over format. Across 84 ODIs played between the two sides, Bangladesh have won 52 and Zimbabwe 32. The two teams sit apart in the ODI rankings as well, with Bangladesh placed ninth and Zimbabwe eleventh.
Recent form also favours Bangladesh. Over the past year, Bangladesh have played 17 matches, winning nine and losing eight for a win percentage of 52.94. Zimbabwe, by contrast, have managed just two wins from six outings, losing four, for a win percentage of 33.33.
Key Performers to Watch
Bangladesh's batting has been anchored by Towhid Hridoy, who has amassed 555 runs over the last year, while Nahid Rana has been the standout with the ball, claiming 27 wickets. For Zimbabwe, Sikandar Raza leads the run-scoring with 228 runs in the same period, and Brad Evans has been the most productive bowler with 14 wickets.
Squads for the Opener
Bangladesh's squad features wicketkeepers Nurul Hasan and Litton Das, batsmen Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy and Tanzid Hasan, all-rounders Mosaddek Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Saif Hassan and Rishad Hossain, and a pace-heavy bowling group including Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Tanvir Islam, Hasan Mahmud and Aliss Al Islam.
Zimbabwe, meanwhile, have named a blend of experience and youth, with wicketkeepers Brendan Taylor, Tafadzwa Tsiga and Tadiwanashe Marumani, batsmen Craig Ervine and Ben Curran, all-rounders Sikandar Raza, Ryan Burl, Wessly Madhevere, Ernest Masuku, Brad Evans and Brian Bennett, and bowlers Wellington Masakadza, Blessing Muzarabani, Vincent Masekesa and Newman Nyamhuri.
Recent History Between the Sides
The two teams last met in a Test series in Bangladesh in 2025, a contest that ended in a share of the trophy. Zimbabwe claimed their first Test win since 2021 in Sylhet on a lively wicket that suited their pacers, before Bangladesh responded emphatically, crushing Zimbabwe by an innings and 106 runs to square the series, as reported on 21 September 2025. That series underlined the competitiveness between the sides even as Bangladesh's white-ball record has been the stronger of the two.
With the tri-series also involving Afghanistan, the opener at the Zayed Cricket Stadium offers both Bangladesh and Zimbabwe an early opportunity to set the tone for a long UAE campaign ahead.
