Nagelsmann Unwavering on Undav's Role for Germany at the World Cup

Deniz Undav may have scored a dramatic 88th-minute winner to secure a 2-1 victory for Germany against Ghana in Stuttgart, but head coach Julian Nagelsmann has made it clear that the striker's role in the national team remains unchanged ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

Deniz Undav celebrating after scoring the winning goal for Germany against Ghana

The match, played in Undav's home city where he represents VfB Stuttgart, saw Kai Havertz open the scoring from the penalty spot in the first half. However, Ghana equalized in the second half before Undav’s late heroics sealed Germany’s seventh consecutive win—their longest winning streak since 2021–2022 under former coach Hansi Flick.

Impact Without Influence

Despite delivering when it mattered most, Undav’s overall performance was subdued. Entering the game at halftime as a substitute for Serge Gnabry, the 27-year-old managed just 13 touches and six completed passes—the lowest among his teammates. His sole shot on target proved decisive, but Nagelsmann was quick to contextualize the moment within the framework of pre-determined team roles.

"He did what he often does in Stuttgart. He wasn’t very involved. I don’t think he was at all until then. But then he scored, that’s what he’s there for," Nagelsmann said. "That’s the crucial thing, that he can take advantage of chances when the opponent is a bit tired. He did what a goalscorer has to do."

Sticking to the Plan

The Germany boss emphasized that tactical consistency and defined roles are paramount as the team prepares for the tournament this summer. He dismissed speculation that Undav’s match-winning contribution might lead to a larger starting role.

“But as I said before, I think if he already has 70 minutes in his legs, then it will be difficult. We have defined roles. And I must stick to them in the next two matches before the World Cup, otherwise I can forget about my credibility. If I then do everything differently, there’s no point in having the discussion about roles in the first place.”

Nagelsmann's comments underline a disciplined approach to squad management, prioritizing strategic clarity over reactive decisions—even in the face of positive individual performances.

Support for Teammates

Undav, visibly moved by the warm reception from the Stuttgart crowd, expressed gratitude for their support. However, he also urged fans to extend the same positivity to his teammates, particularly Leroy Sané, who was jeered upon entering the match in the 78th minute—despite providing the assist for Undav’s winning goal.

“I thank the fans for chanting my name. That made me happy,” said Undav. “But hopefully next time they don’t boo Leroy Sané. That was a pity. Leroy is part of the team, just like myself, every player and every staff member. We should support everyone.”

With momentum building and key players stepping up in crucial moments, Germany’s path into the World Cup continues to take shape—guided by Nagelsmann’s clear vision and an unflinching commitment to tactical identity.
