PM Modi Leads 12th International Yoga Day: 'World's Largest Collective Celebration' Focuses on Healthy Ageing

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in celebrating the 12th International Day of Yoga on Sunday, hosting a mass yoga session at Kolkata's Red Road. Describing June 21—the longest day of the year—as the "world's largest collective celebration," the Prime Minister emphasized the unifying power of yoga across diverse countries and cultures.

International Yoga Day Celebrations

Focus on 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing'

This year's theme, 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing', served as the cornerstone of the celebrations. PM Modi clarified that the theme is relevant to everyone, not just senior citizens, asserting that yoga ensures age does not diminish human potential.

"Our target must be to be more flexible at 40 than we were at 20. Our target must be more energetic at 50 than we were at 30. Our target must be to be more resistant to lifestyle diseases at 70 than we were at 50. This is where Yoga can help us," the Prime Minister stated.

He urged citizens to move beyond observing yoga as a one-day event, calling instead to make it a permanent part of family life and a legacy for future generations.

Global and National Participation

The celebrations extended far beyond Kolkata, with events organized across nearly 2,500 locations worldwide and participation from over 210 Indian missions. Within India, the energy spanned from the Himalayas to the Indian Ocean:

  • Government Initiatives: In Uttar Pradesh, approximately 14.3 million students from over 132,000 government schools participated in mass sessions.
  • Rural Outreach: In Assam, over 3.2 million Self-Help Group (SHG) members across 23,498 villages joined the movement.
  • Leadership Presence: Union Home Minister Amit Shah performed yoga in Ahmedabad, while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh joined celebrations in Shillong.

A Blend of Art and Spirituality

Kolkata set a grand stage for the event with the riverfronts and the iconic Howrah Bridge illuminated by laser displays and a drone show featuring 3,000 drones. The display depicted various yoga postures and cultural motifs of Bengal, coinciding with Paschimbanga Divas (West Bengal Day).

Spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev also shared a message, describing yoga as a "science and technology for inner well-being" that applies to all human beings regardless of religion, race, or gender, helping to unlock the inherent genius within every individual.

International Recognition

The global reach of the practice was further highlighted by the US state of Delaware, where Governor Matthew Meyer officially recognized June 21, 2026, as the International Day of Yoga through a formal proclamation, a move welcomed by the Consulate General of India in New York.
