Football authorities urged to ban agents from recruiting under-18 players to shield young stars from 'malign influences'

A football reader has called on the game's authorities to prohibit agents from recruiting or negotiating on behalf of any player under the age of 18, arguing the step is needed to protect teenage talents from the "malign influences" that can accompany early fame.

The appeal, made in a letter to The Guardian by Phil Murray of Linlithgow, West Lothian, follows Jonathan Liew's recent piece describing Raheem Sterling's "bleak tale" as a reminder of the "absurd path" young footballers face, and Jacob Steinberg's report on Arsenal's Max Dowman — a player whom Mikel Merino likened to Barcelona star Lamine Yamal.

Young footballers under pressure in the modern game

A 'reality check' for parents of aspiring young athletes

Murray argued that the tiny proportion of young footballers originally "signed" by top-flight clubs at what he called a "ludicrously young" age, who then go on to achieve their dream of a Premier League career, should be a reality check for the parents and guardians of all aspiring young athletes. The vast majority, he noted, are instead "summarily dismissed" at the age of 16 or 17 along with most of their contemporaries.

For the exceptions — players such as Raheem Sterling, Max Dowman and JJ Gabriel, who do achieve their ambitions — he said the pressures, "from coaches, fans, sponsors and social media must be immense".

"To navigate such pressures requires an exceptional degree of individual maturity way beyond their years, ideally alongside a trusted safeguarding mentor, to guide them through the many pitfalls in their path, rather than relying on cliched verbal assurances from their clubs regarding their welfare."

The proposal: no agents for under-18s

Murray's central proposal is a blanket prohibition on agents working with minors.

"To help minimise the many risks to such young talents, I would also suggest that the football authorities ban any agent recruiting/negotiating on behalf of any player under the age of 18, none of whom need to be exposed to such malign influences in the early stages of their careers."

Without such measures being put in place, he warned, the game risks a bleak cycle repeating itself with each new generation of hype.

"I have no doubt that in years to come there will be regular reports of young athletes, similarly lauded in their mid-teens as the next 'big thing', only to succumb to the pressures associated with success in their chosen sport – a bleak prospect indeed."
