Ervine and Taylor masterclass powers Zimbabwe to 99-run rout of Bangladesh

Veterans rescue and then wreck Bangladesh in Abu Dhabi

Zimbabwe launched their ODI tri-series campaign in the United Arab Emirates with a commanding 99-run victory over Bangladesh in the opening match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Craig Ervine fell seven runs short of a century in Zimbabwe's win over Bangladesh

Asked to bat first, Zimbabwe were in immediate trouble as Taskin Ahmed produced a fiery opening spell to reduce them to 24 for 3 inside seven overs, dismissing Brian Bennett, Ben Curran and Tafadzwa Tsiga.

From that precarious position, Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine mounted a stunning recovery. The duo put on a mammoth 150-run stand for the fourth wicket. Taylor struck 81 off 101 balls, while Ervine anchored the innings with a top score of 93 off 106 balls, falling just seven runs short of a century.

Saif Hassan provided the breakthrough for Bangladesh, removing Taylor and then quickly accounting for Sikandar Raza. Late cameos from Newman Nyamhuri (21 not out off 17) and Wellington Masakadza (21 not out off 15) lifted Zimbabwe to a competitive 271 for 8 in their 50 overs. Taskin Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 44 from his 10 overs, while Saif Hassan and Shoriful Islam claimed two wickets apiece.

In response, Bangladesh began aggressively through Tanzid Hasan Tamim, who blazed 46 off 38 balls with nine fours and a six. But once Blessing Muzarabani removed Soumya Sarkar for 9 and Newman Nyamhuri dismissed Tanzid in the tenth over, the innings unravelled.

Brad Evans shredded the middle and lower order with 4 for 45, while the spin pair of Wellington Masakadza and Sikandar Raza strangled the scoring, sharing three wickets between them. Regular strikes in the middle overs ensured Bangladesh never recovered. Their best subsequent stand was just 32 for the ninth wicket between Rishad Hossain and Taskin Ahmed, but it was far too late. Bangladesh were bowled out for 172 in 33.4 overs.

Brief scores: Zimbabwe 271/8 in 50 overs (Craig Ervine 93, Brendan Taylor 81; Taskin Ahmed 3-44) beat Bangladesh 172 all out in 33.4 overs (Tanzid Hasan Tamim 46; Brad Evans 4-45, Wellington Masakadza 2-18) by 99 runs.

Taskin calls collapse a 'reality check'

Speaking after the defeat on October 18, pacer Taskin Ahmed delivered a blunt assessment of his team's batting, describing the collapse that condemned them to the 99-run defeat as a "reality check" that exposed the side's frailties. Taskin urged the batting unit to address its consistency and game awareness ahead of a must-win clash with Afghanistan.
