SA20 Season 4 opens with run-fests, first-ever Super Over and record milestones
The opening week of SA20 Season 4 has delivered a spectacle of high-quality cricket and vibrant entertainment, with fans flocking to venues across South Africa and seven matches already sold out.
The season burst into life at Newlands, where defending champions MI Cape Town and Durban's Super Giants produced a run-fest, piling up a combined 449 runs, including 25 sixes and 40 boundaries. Durban's Super Giants' 232/5 became the highest total ever recorded at the venue, eclipsing the mark set in the 2024 final — and proved too much for MI Cape Town despite Ryan Rickelton's superb 113, the first century of the season after none were scored in the whole of Season 3.
History continued to be made at the Wanderers, where the league witnessed its first-ever Super Over, with Joburg Super Kings edging Durban's Super Giants on New Year's Day.
The derbies have also delivered their share of surprises. Joburg Super Kings won in Centurion for the first time, while Paarl Royals completed a historic double over MI Cape Town.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape have enjoyed their best-ever start to a campaign, recording two bonus-point wins, and there were milestones with the ball too: Marco Jansen and Ottneil Baartman became the first bowlers to reach 50 SA20 wickets.
Off the field, the excitement has spread to the stands, with six fans already claiming prizes in the Betway Catch R2 million giveaway.
